Where the thesis has only one volume, the Divisional<br />

Board, on receipt <strong>of</strong> a request in writing from the<br />

candidate and supported by a statement in writing from<br />

the Head <strong>of</strong> School, may order that, for a period <strong>of</strong> up to<br />

three years from the date <strong>of</strong> that order, the copies <strong>of</strong> the<br />

thesis forwarded to the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Library and the school<br />

shall be made available only to researchers or readers<br />

specifically authorised in writing by the Divisional Board.<br />

13. Copyright<br />

Copyright in the thesis is the property <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>. Those rights, or any part <strong>of</strong> them,<br />

may be assigned by Council, on the advice <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Divisional Board, to the candidate.<br />

14. Regulations<br />

The Divisional Board may recommend to the Academic<br />

Board that regulations be made under this statute<br />

regarding the admission to candidature, reports on<br />

candidates during the period <strong>of</strong> candidature, the<br />

examination <strong>of</strong> candidates and related matters.<br />

15. Change in statute<br />

This statute may be amended from time to time by Council<br />

on the advice <strong>of</strong> the Academic Board acting on the<br />

recommendation <strong>of</strong> the Divisional Board. In the event <strong>of</strong><br />

an amendment being made subsequent to the beginning<br />

<strong>of</strong> a student's candidature, that candidate may elect to<br />

continue under the statute which was in effect at the time<br />

candidature began.<br />

Statute for the degree <strong>of</strong><br />

Master (by publication)<br />

1. Definitions<br />

1.1 General<br />

Committee means the Higher Degrees Committee <strong>of</strong><br />

the Academic Board;<br />

Council means the Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Technology</strong>;<br />

Universitvmeans <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>; --<br />

~ivisionaj Board means the sub-committee <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Universitv's Academic Board called the 'Divisional<br />

Board' (o'r any authorised sub-committee there<strong>of</strong>)<br />

which is responsible for studies being undertaken in<br />

the area;<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> School means the person appointed Head <strong>of</strong><br />

School in a Higher Education Division and responsible<br />

for studies in the particular discipline.<br />

1.2 Publication<br />

Publication is a major published paper, a collection <strong>of</strong><br />

papers or a monograph. A publication must be based<br />

on original research, investigation or developmental<br />

work carried out by the candidate in an industrial,<br />

commercial, governmental, educational or research<br />

organisation, or carried out as a member <strong>of</strong> the staff<br />

<strong>of</strong> a college <strong>of</strong> advanced education provided that the<br />

subject and nature <strong>of</strong> the research work are accepted<br />

by the <strong>University</strong> as appropriate for examination <strong>of</strong><br />

the award <strong>of</strong> the degree <strong>of</strong> Master.<br />

Title <strong>of</strong> degree<br />

The degree <strong>of</strong> Master may be awarded in a field <strong>of</strong> study<br />

<strong>of</strong> any faculty <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>. Degrees shall be<br />

designated as follows:<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Applied Science<br />

MAppSc<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />

MA<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Business<br />

MBus<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Engineering<br />

MEng<br />

Grading <strong>of</strong> degree<br />

The degree <strong>of</strong> Master shall be awarded in one grade only.<br />

Admission to candidature<br />

4.1 Admission requirements<br />

A candidate for a degree <strong>of</strong> Master by publication<br />

shall:<br />

(a) have held for a minimum period <strong>of</strong> five years:<br />

(i) a degree <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> or <strong>of</strong> any other<br />

institution approved by the Committee for<br />

this purpose; or<br />

(ii) such other qualification or experience as<br />

might be accepted as equivalent to (i)<br />

above.<br />

(b) submit to the <strong>University</strong> a publication or<br />

publications.<br />

4.2 Application<br />

No application for admission to candidature may<br />

be aooroved bv the Committee exceot with the<br />

For the purpose <strong>of</strong> assessing an application, the <strong>University</strong><br />

shall require that any publication submitted in respect <strong>of</strong><br />

the application:<br />

(a) has been the subject <strong>of</strong> critical independent<br />

examination;<br />

(b)<br />

(c)<br />

is available to the general public; and<br />

where it consists <strong>of</strong> several papers, relates to one<br />

aspect <strong>of</strong> the same subject.<br />

A report issued by an organisation shall not, without the<br />

express consent <strong>of</strong> the organisation and the <strong>University</strong>, be<br />

accepted as a publication for the purpose <strong>of</strong> this statute.<br />

In the event <strong>of</strong> joint publication, the applicant shall provide<br />

the <strong>University</strong> with a written statement indicating the<br />

extent and nature <strong>of</strong> the applicant's personal contribution<br />

to the project. The applicant's statement should be<br />

countersioned by the ioint author(s1 and su~ewisor (where<br />

applicable), or a written statement should be provided by<br />

the joint author(s) and supe~isor (where applicable).<br />

The publication submitted should represent work which is<br />

considered bv the aoorooriate Divisional Board to be the<br />

equivalent oitwo years iull-time study.<br />

A candidate shall normally be required to present at least<br />

one seminar to staff and students <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> on the<br />

subject <strong>of</strong> publication.<br />

A candidate may not submit for examination work<br />

previously submitted for any previous academic<br />

qualifications.<br />
