Co-major in Psychology and<br />

Students accepted into the co-major through the Division <strong>of</strong><br />

Business, Humanities and Social Science study the major<br />

sequence <strong>of</strong> psychology subjects described above. In first<br />

year, students must take AY100 and AY101. In second year,<br />

students must study AY202, AY203, AY204, and SM278, and<br />

in third year, AY312, AY319, AY320, and SM378.<br />

The major in psychophysiology is taught by the Division <strong>of</strong><br />

Science, Engineering and Design. Students should consult the<br />

Division <strong>of</strong> Science, Engineering and Design section <strong>of</strong> the<br />

handbook for details <strong>of</strong> the psychophysiology subjects<br />

constituting this major.<br />

Sociology<br />

The sociology course is designed to provide an understanding<br />

E! <strong>of</strong> the social world in which we live and work. It deals with<br />

the individual's place in society and the social processes and<br />

inst~tutions which shape individual and group behaviour and<br />

2 attitudes. Developing an understanding <strong>of</strong> these issues is<br />

intellectually rewarding and the conceptual and research<br />

6. skills acquired through the study <strong>of</strong> sociology are useful in<br />

a<br />

many fields <strong>of</strong> employment. For example, they are crucial in<br />

-" personnel management, social research, policy analysis and<br />

industrial relations.<br />

In stage one sociology, basic concepts <strong>of</strong> sociology are<br />

: explained by reference to the sociological analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

Z contemporary Australian society. This is a full-year study,<br />

consisting <strong>of</strong> AS100 Sociology 1A and AS101 Sociology 1 B.<br />

LA Students are required to take two stage two subjects to<br />

4, pursue a major in sociology. Students intending to major in<br />

lu- Sociology are strongly advised to include AS204 - Models <strong>of</strong><br />

LA<br />

n. Sociological Analysis - as one <strong>of</strong> these.<br />

At stage three, students completing a major must take<br />

' AS306 Methodology <strong>of</strong> Social Research plus two <strong>of</strong> the other<br />

subjects <strong>of</strong>fered. Not all <strong>of</strong> the optional stage two and stage<br />

three subjects are run in any one year. <strong>Please</strong> check the<br />

current timetable.<br />

Students who do well in their undergraduate work may apply<br />

to be admitted to the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts (Honours) course in<br />

Social Science.<br />

For those students intending to pursue a career in research<br />

and policy analysis the Graduate Diploma in Urban Research<br />

and Policy is <strong>of</strong>fered. A Master <strong>of</strong> Arts by coursework in<br />

Urban Research and Policy is also <strong>of</strong>fered.<br />

Sociology also <strong>of</strong>fers a Graduate Diploma in Equal<br />

Opportunity Administration and accepts suitably qualified<br />

applicants for the degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Arts and PhD in<br />

Sociology by research and major thesis.<br />

~05s Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business<br />

The Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business is a three year full-time (or six year<br />

part-time) degree program <strong>of</strong>fered at both the Hawthorn and<br />

Mooroolbark campuses. Part-time study is only available at<br />

Mooroolbark during the day and it is expected that students<br />

who commence their course at Mooroolbark will undertake<br />

their complete course there<br />

Entrance requirements<br />

The normal entry requirements for the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business<br />

degree program is successful completion <strong>of</strong> VCE or<br />

equivalent. It is recommended that applicants have studied<br />

mathematics to at least Year 11 standard.<br />

Other qualifications<br />

Applicants must have a qualification deemed to be the<br />

equivalent <strong>of</strong> the VCE by the Victorian Curriculum and<br />

Assessment Board. Such qualifications may include interstate<br />

and overseas qualifications and associate diploma studies at a<br />

TAFE institution.<br />

Special entry<br />

Applicants who have not completed a Year 12 qualification or<br />

who completed a Year 12 qualification five or more years ago<br />

are required to sit for an aptitude test before they can be<br />

considered for admission. This test is administered by the<br />

Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre.<br />

Quota<br />

Not all qualified applicants can be accepted because <strong>of</strong> the<br />

limited number <strong>of</strong> available places.<br />

Applications<br />

All applications for the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business, including special<br />

entry, later year entry and part-time, must be made through<br />

the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). Students<br />

enrolled in programs taught within the Division <strong>of</strong> Business,<br />

Humanities and Social Science may make application to<br />

transfer to other programs within the Division by completing<br />

an Application for internal Course Transfer available from the<br />

Divisional <strong>of</strong>fice, Level 9 <strong>of</strong> the Business and Arts building.<br />

Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business specialisations<br />

The course leading to the award <strong>of</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Business<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers major, minor and elective studies in accounting,<br />

business law, business modelling, computing, economics,<br />

finance, marketing and organisation behaviour.<br />

The following majors are available from Arts subjects:<br />

Australian Studies, Asian Studies, Cultural Studies, Italian,<br />

Japanese, Korean, Literature, Media Studies, Sociology,<br />

Political Studies, Psychology, Philosophy and Cultural Inquiry,<br />

and Vietnamese.<br />

In addition to the business core subjects one major must be<br />

taken from one <strong>of</strong> the approved business specialisations.<br />
