Subject aims and description<br />

The subject considers the management <strong>of</strong> technological<br />

resources available in the execution <strong>of</strong> a construction project.<br />

Planning <strong>of</strong> construction programs: hazards, local factors,<br />

works layout, process dissection, construction program, plant<br />

schedule, critical path analysis, detailed planning, estimate<br />

summary.<br />

Plant and equipment, characteristics <strong>of</strong> the site and<br />

construction methodologies, and the physical and human<br />

resources are considered.<br />

Resource allocation: assignment <strong>of</strong> plant and equipment to<br />

tasks; allocation <strong>of</strong> labour to job; estimating likely outputs;<br />

smoothing resource allocation; establishing plant and<br />

equipment spread.<br />

A compulsory subject in the Graduate Diploma in<br />

Management for full-time students only.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

This subject is designed to draw together the topics covered<br />

in the other subjects <strong>of</strong> the Graduate Diploma in<br />

Manaaement with an industrial emphasis and provide<br />

additional material to enable the student to develop an<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> the process <strong>of</strong> management in business<br />

organisations.<br />

Particular emphasis is placed on recognising the combinations<br />

<strong>of</strong> internal and external circumstances that create a business<br />

opportunity; analysing the risk attached to grasping<br />

o~aortunities: develo~ina the ~ eo~le and business skills<br />

needed to 1a;nch a s~cc~sful'co~mercial venture based on<br />

technology products or services; practicing sound<br />

management skills and techniques in converting<br />

opportunities to reality; practicing sound management skills<br />

and techniques to control the resources available to grow the<br />

business or organisation; recognising, discussing and selecting<br />

from a broad range <strong>of</strong> business strategy development<br />

methodologies; preparing a commercial business plan;<br />

describing and assisting the implementation <strong>of</strong> appropriate<br />

systems and controls to manage a new or growing company<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

This subject aims to provide the student with the ability to<br />

recognise the difference between an idea and an<br />

opportunity, identify where opportunities exist, and examine<br />

in depth its attractiveness to create or 'grow' a business. A<br />

screening guide will be used to assess the product or service<br />

in terms <strong>of</strong> market place potential, financial returns and the<br />

opportunities for further business development.<br />
