The HelpDesk provides a single point <strong>of</strong> contact to the user<br />

community at <strong>Swinburne</strong> and maintains a centralised call<br />

registration system which logs all problems associated with<br />

computer hardware and s<strong>of</strong>tware, local and wide area<br />

networks, communications, e-mail, telephones and Voice<br />

Mail. Help Desk staff attempt to solve problems over the<br />

phone if possible, otherwise calls are assigned to the<br />

appropriate specialist group for resolution.<br />

The HelpDesk is open between 8.30am and 5.00pm Monday<br />

to Friday and has two full-time staff. It is located in Room<br />

EN308.<br />

services provided by CSIT.<br />

Voice Services<br />

Voice Services are responsible for all telecommunications and<br />

VoiceMail services at each <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Swinburne</strong> campuses,<br />

operate the switchboard and produce the internal telephone<br />

directory.<br />

During 1994 all equipment and facilities at all three<br />

campuses were upgraded. Advanced features are available<br />

and kill function between all campuses. The network is<br />

centrallv o~erated allowina the switchboard operators to<br />

accept (ncbming calls fromanywhere and rediitribute them<br />

to any campus. Microwave links are used between Hawthorn<br />

and Prahran and Hawthorn and Mooroolbark.<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> the upgrade, ISDN indials have replaced the PSTN<br />

ind~als to provide <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> as a whole with a<br />

more integrated and streamlined numbering system.<br />

Depending on the growth <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> in the next five to<br />

ten years we may see further numbers in use. These<br />

upgrades are designed to meet <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s expanding<br />

telecommunications needs into the year 2000.<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers a variety <strong>of</strong> courses and support<br />

programs for migrants, for whom English is their second<br />

language, who are:<br />

preparing to enrol in <strong>Swinburne</strong> or other postsecondary<br />

courses<br />

currently enrolled in <strong>Swinburne</strong> courses<br />

wanting to develop language skills to improve study<br />

and work prospects.<br />

Part-time, evening courses<br />

Preparation for further study and work and personal<br />

development - Hawthorn campus only.<br />

Language support within a<br />

mainstream course<br />

At both campuses, when circumstances allow, ESL students can<br />

have access to English as a second language (ESL) trained<br />

teachers and extra tuition time if they are enrolled in VCE,<br />

advanced certificate or associate diploma courses.<br />

Independent learning<br />

At both camDuses students have access to materials for<br />

independent'study (self-access for language development<br />

purposes; audio, computer-based and text-based materials are<br />

provided).<br />

Non-permanent residents<br />

Courses are run by the English Language Centre for<br />

international students and others who are in Australia on<br />
