Applied Science<br />

Programs are <strong>of</strong>fered in areas <strong>of</strong> applied chemistry,<br />

biochemistry, biophysics, instrumental science, computer<br />

science, mathematics, operational research, statistics,<br />

mathemat~cal modelling and mathematics education.<br />

Applicants who are graduates at Bachelors or Masters degree<br />

level and who have shown a high standard <strong>of</strong> academic<br />

achievement may be admitted to candidature for the degree <strong>of</strong><br />

PhD. Applicants shall have demonstrated to the Higher<br />

Degrees Committee <strong>of</strong> the Academic Board a capacity for<br />

research and investigational work in the area <strong>of</strong> study<br />

proposed.<br />

To be assessed for this degree, a candidate must present a<br />

major thesis based on original research, investigation or<br />

development work carried out either at <strong>Swinburne</strong> or<br />

externally. External work may be carried out at any approved<br />

industrial, governmental, educational or research organisation.<br />

Copies <strong>of</strong> the statute for the degree <strong>of</strong> PhD are at the end <strong>of</strong><br />

this Handbook in the 'Procedures and Regulations' chapter or<br />

are available from the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Graduate Research School.
