Mooroolbark campus<br />
Edinburgh Road, Mooroolbark<br />
The Division <strong>of</strong> Business, Humanities and Social Science <strong>of</strong>fers<br />
a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree program at the Mooroolbark<br />
campus. Students enrolled here may take majors in<br />
psychology, media studies, sociology, economics, literature,<br />
philosophy and cultural inquiry, and political studies.<br />
Currently, Mooroolbark campus students who wish to study a<br />
language (Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese or Italian) must<br />
secure a place at the Hawthorn campus and be prepared to<br />
travel between campuses. The full range <strong>of</strong> subjects listed at<br />
the end <strong>of</strong> this section will not always be <strong>of</strong>fered at the<br />
Mooroolbark campus.<br />
It may not always be possible for students to complete the<br />
third year <strong>of</strong> a major on that campus.<br />
Classes are <strong>of</strong>fered to full-time and part-time students during<br />
the day only at the Mooroolbark campus.<br />

in twenty semester subjects (or equivalent full-year<br />
subjects) including a minimum <strong>of</strong> six semester subjects<br />
or equivalent in each <strong>of</strong> stages one, two and three.<br />
Note: Students in their first year, who do not take any<br />
language studies, are strongly encouraged:<br />
- if full-time, to select their eight semester subjects<br />
from at least six different subject areas;<br />
-if part-time, to select their four semester subjects<br />
from at least three different subject areas.<br />
Students should check the duration and semester subject<br />
value <strong>of</strong> each subject, as set out under subject details at the<br />
end <strong>of</strong> this chapter.<br />
Studies constituting major strands<br />
In Economics, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Psychology,<br />
Sociology and Vietnamese, majors must include a full year <strong>of</strong><br />
study at stage one as well as at higher stages. In Asian<br />
Studies, Australian Studies, Cultural Studies, Media Studies,<br />
Literature, Philosophy and Cultural lnquiry and Political<br />
Studies, majors may be constructed with one or two<br />
semester subjects at stage one.<br />
In special cases a sequence <strong>of</strong> studies may be selected from<br />
two related subject areas to constitute a major.<br />
Full-time students<br />
(a) Afull-time student is usually required to enrol in eight<br />
semester subjects at stage one and six semester subjects<br />
at stages two and three. In special circumstances,<br />
permission may be granted to vary this requirement on<br />
application to the Manager, Student and Course<br />
Administration, Division <strong>of</strong> Business, Humanities and<br />
Social Science.<br />
(b) In each year <strong>of</strong> study full-time students are expected to<br />
qain passes in at least six semester subjects in stage one,<br />
and at least four in each <strong>of</strong> stages two and three.<br />
Part-time students<br />
(a) A part-time student is usually required to enrol in four<br />
semester subjects in one year. Permission may be<br />
granted to vary this requirement on application to the<br />
Manager, Student and Course Administration.<br />
(b) A part-time student will be considered to have made<br />
satisfactory progress if he or she has achieved passes in<br />
three semester subjects in a given year.<br />
Course descriptions<br />
Interdisciplinary Majors<br />
The Division <strong>of</strong> Business, Humanities and Social Science <strong>of</strong>fers<br />
three interdisciplinary majors: Asian Studies, Australian<br />
Studies and Cultural Studies.<br />
Asian Studies<br />
Asian Studies incorporates subjects from political studies and<br />
Asian languages and cultures. The major focus is on<br />
contemporary Asia, with emphasis on the political economy<br />
and international relations in some subjects, and on the<br />
historical-cultural background in others.<br />
The subjects included in the major are listed below. In<br />
general, students must complete one subject at stage one,<br />
two semester subjects at stage two and three semester<br />
subjects at stage three for a major. In the case <strong>of</strong> the Asian<br />
Studies major, students must do at least one Political Studies<br />
subject in stage one and one in stage two.<br />

Australian Studies<br />
As an interdisciplinary major, Australian Studies allows<br />
students to explore the contours <strong>of</strong> modern Australia by<br />
taking a combination <strong>of</strong> three compulsory subjects and three<br />
optional semester subjects chosen from Literature, Media,<br />
Philosophy and Cultural Inquiry, Political Studies and<br />
Sociology.
