6. Students with Special Needs and<br />

Disabilities<br />

6.1 Students with long or short term disabilities may<br />

apply on the prescribed form t o the Divisional<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice to seek the use <strong>of</strong> such facilities and<br />

assistance in the examination and/or assessment<br />

procedures necessary to ensure they are not<br />

disadvantaged relative to other candidates. This<br />

may include requests for extra time. The Divisional<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice will notify the Equity Unit, Examinations<br />

Officer and the Subject Convener <strong>of</strong> the<br />

lodgement <strong>of</strong> the form.<br />

6.2 Where a subject has assessment requirements<br />

other than a formal examination, requests for<br />

assistance must be lodged at least two weeks prior<br />

to the final assessment submission.<br />

6.2.1 For long term disabilities the form is lodged<br />

once only in first semester <strong>of</strong> the first year<br />

<strong>of</strong> studies and should be at least two weeks<br />

prior to the examination period.<br />

6.2.2 For short term disabilities lodgement <strong>of</strong> the<br />

form mav be at any time during the<br />

semeste; but should be made at least two<br />

weeks orior to the examination period if the<br />

disabiliiy exists at this time.<br />

6.3 The Subject cdnvener, in consultation with the<br />

lntearation Committee if appropriate to the needs<br />

<strong>of</strong> t6e student concerned, will decide whether to<br />

approve such assistance. In the case <strong>of</strong> disabilities<br />

occurring and advised in the two weeks prior to<br />

the examination, the Convener may recommend<br />

an alternative method <strong>of</strong> assessment to sitting the<br />

actual examination on the due date.<br />

7. Examinations<br />

7.1 Examination period<br />

Academic Board shall, on the advice <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Academic Registrar, designate a period <strong>of</strong> time in<br />

each semester during which period examinations<br />

shall be held.<br />

7.2 Timetables<br />

7.2.1 Approximately half-way through each<br />

semester a provisional timetable for<br />

examinations to be held during that<br />

semester's examination period will be<br />

posted on the examinations notice board. It<br />

is the responsibility <strong>of</strong> students to <strong>note</strong> their<br />

provisional examination times and report<br />

immediately any clashes to the<br />

Examinations Officer.<br />

7.2.2 The final examination timetable will be<br />

posted on the examinations notice board<br />

approximately two weeks prior to the<br />

beginning <strong>of</strong> the examinations. It is the<br />

responsibility <strong>of</strong> students to <strong>note</strong> dates and<br />

times <strong>of</strong> examinations. Misreading <strong>of</strong> the<br />

timetable will not generally be accepted as<br />

sufficient reason for granting a special<br />

examination.<br />

7.2.3 Because <strong>of</strong> the possibility <strong>of</strong> mis-hearing<br />

information <strong>University</strong> staff are not<br />

permitted to provide information about<br />

examination timetables over the telephone.<br />

7.3 Conduct <strong>of</strong> examinations<br />

7.3.1 Unless otherwise stated on the examination<br />

timetable, the following arrangements will<br />

apply:<br />

(a) candidates for morning examinations<br />

will begin writing at 9.1 5am. A period<br />

<strong>of</strong> reading time prior to 9.1 5 may be<br />

allowed. The examination timetable will<br />

show the period <strong>of</strong> reading time.<br />

(b) candidates for afternoon examinations<br />

will begin writing at 1.45pm.A period <strong>of</strong><br />

reading time prior to 1.45 pm may be<br />

allowed. The examination timetable will<br />

show the period <strong>of</strong> reading time.<br />

7.3.2 Students are required to obey the<br />

Examination Supervisor's directions for the<br />

proper conduct <strong>of</strong> the examinations.<br />

7.3.3 Except for the completion <strong>of</strong> any<br />

identification materials as may be required<br />

by the Examination Supervisor, no writing or<br />

marking <strong>of</strong> examination material shall be<br />

permitted during a period <strong>of</strong> reading time.<br />

7.3.4 Unless with the special permission <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Examination Supervisor:<br />

a) no candidate may enter the examination<br />

room later than half an hour after the<br />

writinq time for the examination has<br />

commenced;<br />

b) no candidate may leave the examination<br />

room during the first half hour after the<br />

start <strong>of</strong> the writing time; and<br />

c) no candidate may leave the examination<br />

room during the last fifteen minutes<br />

before the end <strong>of</strong> the examination<br />

writing time.<br />

7.3.5 At the end <strong>of</strong> the examination students are<br />

required to remain seated until the<br />

Examination Supervisor has collected all<br />

scripts and <strong>University</strong> material.<br />

7.3.6 Students are required to have identity cards<br />

with them at the commencement <strong>of</strong> and<br />

during an examination. The student identity<br />

cards must be produced when requested by<br />

an Examination Supervisor.<br />

7.3.7 Unless otherwise specified all answers must<br />

be written in English.<br />

7.3.8 Calculators or other electronic devices may<br />

not be used during reading time unless so<br />

instructed by the Examination Supervisor.<br />

7.3.9 Calculators and other electronic devices as<br />

prescribed by the subject panel may be<br />

used. Such calculators must be battery<br />

operated. Students are required to provide<br />

their own calculators, drawing instruments,<br />

writing materials and other specified<br />

equipment. Students will not be permitted<br />

to borrow or lend any equipment or<br />

material during an examination.
