3 The aim <strong>of</strong> the degree course is to train designers to work<br />

effectively in areas where information is conveyed by visual<br />

means, such as advertising, publishing, publicity, printing,<br />

merchandising, education and some research projects. The<br />

course is planned to produce imaginative designers, who, with<br />

specialisation and experience in industry, should achieve<br />

positions commensurate with their individual talents.<br />

The first two years <strong>of</strong> the course are common to each <strong>of</strong> the<br />

degreelhonours streams but in the final degree year, a number<br />

<strong>of</strong> special bias studies are <strong>of</strong>fered, including photography,<br />

illustration and three-dimensional design.<br />

Industry Based Learning (IBL) Program<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> the honours year is to meet the present and future<br />

needs <strong>of</strong> industry, and to train people with a high degree <strong>of</strong><br />

creative ability for positions <strong>of</strong> administrative responsibility in<br />

the areas <strong>of</strong> direction and production <strong>of</strong> printing, publishing,<br />

computer-based production techniques, advertising, education<br />

and information design.<br />

At the completion <strong>of</strong> the second year, students are selected for<br />

the honours program. They are required to spend the whole <strong>of</strong><br />

the third year working in an industrial situation organised by<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong>. This third year enables the student to begin<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice, supervised by senior staff.<br />

During the year in industry, students are required to attend the<br />

<strong>University</strong> for one day per week for subjects: Print <strong>Technology</strong><br />

and Art and Design Culture.<br />

In the final year, in addition to Studio Projects 4, Design<br />

Management is studied.<br />

Design Centre Degree Program<br />

Degree students who achieve an overall high standard in their<br />

final year qualify to apply for the Design Centre Honours<br />

program which provides an introduction to pr<strong>of</strong>essional design<br />

practice in an educational environment.<br />

Students who are selected for this program undertake a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional consultancy-based design projects under<br />

the guidance <strong>of</strong> lecturing staff and industry mentors.<br />
