The Laboratory has a major collaborative link with Cray<br />
Research Australia. The objectives are to explore and promote<br />
innovation through high performance computing in Australian<br />
business and industry. The collaboration also seeks to<br />
demonstrate how numerically intensive computing can bring a<br />
dramatic improvement in 'time to market' for product<br />
developments and hence significantly improve<br />
competitiveness. It also provides appropriate training programs<br />

The Centre provides a focal point between the business and<br />
government sectors and the management discipline at<br />
<strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Its focus is to assist Australian business<br />
and industry in the development <strong>of</strong> their domestic as well as<br />

critical importance <strong>of</strong> satisfying the expectation <strong>of</strong> all<br />
customers, both internal and external, at all times.<br />
During 199411 995 the Centre is conducting a series <strong>of</strong> short<br />
programs on world class service design and execution.<br />
Media and Telecommunications<br />
Centre<br />
The Media and Telecommunications Centre, established in<br />
1988, is based in the media studies subject area in the Division<br />
<strong>of</strong> Business, Humanities and Social Science. Its role is to initiate<br />
educational programs that will foster closer cooperative<br />
connections with industry and the wider community. The<br />
activities it has undertaken include:<br />
in 1989, the establishment <strong>of</strong> the Commercial Radio<br />
Course to provide training for those planning a career<br />
in commercial radio<br />
in conjunction with media studies course work in the<br />
Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts program, the production <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />
publications and publication <strong>of</strong> local community<br />
newsletters<br />
the presentation <strong>of</strong> short courses on a variety <strong>of</strong> mediarelated<br />
subjects (such as, media regulation, techniques<br />
<strong>of</strong> radio production, media in the classroom, media<br />
awareness) and desktop publishing skills<br />
a publishing program <strong>of</strong> dossiers and monographs on<br />
film, television and general media subjects<br />
research consultancies on telecommunications and<br />
media in the Pacific, Asia and Australia.<br />
National Centre for New Media<br />
Arts & Technologies (NCNMAT)<br />
The National Centre was established in 1992 as a three year<br />
research and development project co-funded by the Victorian<br />
Education Foundation and Industry to provide a focus for<br />
research, development and pr<strong>of</strong>essional production training in<br />
the 'new media' industries.<br />
The Centre aims<br />
The Centre aims to encourage the creative and innovative use<br />
<strong>of</strong> the motion picture medium and to foster producer, writer,<br />
director talent; to provide a 'show-case' site for new talent,<br />
technologies, production methodologies and programs, with<br />
special emphasis upon the promotion <strong>of</strong> an interactive multimedia<br />
literate motion picture culture; to provide a resource,<br />
consultancy and advisory service to industry and education; to<br />
host and conduct short courses, seminars and pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
training workshops and develop accredited training programs<br />
and standards for industry; to enqaqe and enable collaborative<br />
research and development and joint-venture projects with<br />
industry and government; to provide production resources and<br />
teaching expertise to compliment the full-time postgraduate<br />
studies program and to foster Masters and Doctoral studies: to<br />
facilitate the creation, production, publication, exhibition and<br />
distribution <strong>of</strong> works which exemplify an artistic and innovative<br />
use <strong>of</strong> the medium; to aid the development <strong>of</strong> an indigenous<br />
Australian industry and workforce that is internationally<br />
competitive in respect <strong>of</strong> technology, skills and production<br />
standards.<br />
National Korean Studies Centre<br />

The National Korean Studies Centre was established with<br />
Commonwealth Government funding in 1990 as a joint<br />
venture <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> Universitv, La Trobe Universitv. Monash<br />
<strong>University</strong> and the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>~elbourne. The mkion <strong>of</strong> the<br />
centre is:<br />
to develop and expand teaching, research and<br />
associated activities in Korean Studies, including<br />
language, culture, politics, law, business, education and<br />
other relevant disciplines<br />
to enhance the Australian community's knowledge and<br />
understanding <strong>of</strong> Korea<br />
to support Australia's economic and other national<br />
development strategies<br />
Building on existing teaching programs conducted in<br />
consortium member institutions, the Centre:<br />
fosters the design and delivery <strong>of</strong> vocationally and<br />
culturally relevant Korean Studies courses in all sectors<strong>of</strong><br />
the Australian education system<br />
fosters and undertakes high quality comparative<br />
regional research relevant to Korean Studies and to<br />
Australia-Korea relations<br />
promotes greater awareness and mutual awareness <strong>of</strong>all<br />
aspects <strong>of</strong> the Australia-Korea business and trade<br />
relationship<br />
promotes greater awareness <strong>of</strong> Korea in Australia.
