Subject aims and description<br />
This subject aims to provide further training in reading skills<br />
to enable students to deal with contemporary and original<br />
Vietnamese texts on their own. Selected texts, contemporary<br />
in nature and diverse in topic, will form the basis for the<br />
required reading for this subject.<br />

AYl 00 and AYl 01 are designed to introduce students to the<br />
content and method <strong>of</strong> psychology. Topics introduced in<br />
AYIOO include psychology as a science, ethics in research,<br />
biological foundations <strong>of</strong> behaviour, sensation, perception<br />
and consciousness, emotion, learning and experimental<br />
design and analysis.<br />
Preliminary reading<br />
Students wishing to familiarise themselves with concepts in<br />
psychology could read any recent introductory psychology text<br />
available from most regional libraries<br />

Subject aims and description<br />
This subject concentrates on various aspects <strong>of</strong> cognition<br />
such as memory, information processing, intelligence and<br />
problem solving. Other topics covered include motivation,<br />
genetics, personality, sexuality, stress and coping and<br />
psychopathology. The design and analysis <strong>of</strong> experimental<br />
studies forms a major part <strong>of</strong> the teaching program.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />
This subject examines major theories <strong>of</strong> cognitive functioning<br />
and the mechanisms and processes involved in memory,<br />
attention and human performance. It will provide a basis for<br />
the understanding <strong>of</strong> skill acquisition and examine the effects<br />
<strong>of</strong> motivation, overload and arousal levels on performance.<br />
After a general introduction to theory, contemporary issues<br />
are considered, including decision-making, perceptual-motor<br />
performance and clinical and organisational applications.<br />

This subject focuses on development and maturation in the<br />
early periods <strong>of</strong> life from infancy and childhood through to<br />
adolescence.The emphasis is on social, emotional, cognitive<br />
and intellectual development with a comprehensive<br />
experiential and experimental program supporting the<br />
theoretical material.The teaching program consists <strong>of</strong> two<br />
lectures, a practical session and/or a tutorial class per week.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />
This subject involves the scientific study <strong>of</strong> the personal and<br />
situational factors that influence an individual's behaviour in<br />
social situations. The aim is to introduce students to the key<br />
conceptual and theoretical models in social psychology and<br />
to develop an appreciation <strong>of</strong> how our behaviour is affected<br />
by the presence or awareness <strong>of</strong> others.<br />
The teaching program involves two lectures, a tutorial/<br />
practical session and an average <strong>of</strong> one hour <strong>of</strong> project work<br />
per week.
