This subject will outline the basic theory and practice <strong>of</strong><br />

modelmaking.<br />

Subject description<br />

This subject will explore the basic materials and techniques<br />

used in the production <strong>of</strong> design models and prototypes.<br />

Tutorial and workshop sessions will ensure the safe use <strong>of</strong><br />

handtools, machinery and the various materials used in<br />

modelmaking for design. The function <strong>of</strong> models and their role<br />

in the design process will also be discussed and demonstrated.<br />

To cultivate a visual language by observation and personal<br />

expression through various media.<br />

Subject description<br />

The content includes drawing the human figure, drawing from<br />

studio 'set-ups', and field work expanding on such topics as<br />

life, nature, color, form, expression and texture using basic<br />

drawing principles.<br />

To introduce computing and give an understanding <strong>of</strong> the<br />

variation <strong>of</strong> programs and languages available.<br />

Subject description<br />

To introduce the computer as a tool in aiding the process <strong>of</strong><br />

business activities such as information retrieval and as a<br />

method <strong>of</strong> communication. Topics will cover a basic<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> language and simple programs for every day<br />

use such as word processing, database and spreadsheet.<br />

Computer environments will be explored and the differences<br />

discussed. The student will gain an understanding <strong>of</strong> how to<br />

use computers for the purposes <strong>of</strong> presenting written<br />

information and retrieving data.<br />

Subject aims<br />

To establish frames <strong>of</strong> reference, a broad cultural base for<br />

students, by the exploration <strong>of</strong> developments in art and<br />

design during the modernist period. The course aims to bring<br />

students to an awareness <strong>of</strong> the role that art and design plays<br />

in shaping and communicating our social, political and<br />

cultural values.<br />

Subject description<br />

Semester one explores European and Australian developments<br />

in desiqn and art ranqinq from the industrial revolution and<br />

neo-classicism to theen2 <strong>of</strong> the nineteenth century. While<br />

charting the work <strong>of</strong> individual designers and artists the course<br />

also explores cultural themes such as gender and class,<br />

imperialism and nationalism, east and west and considers the<br />

influence <strong>of</strong> political and social conditions on western culture.<br />

Subject aims<br />

To expand the range <strong>of</strong> design methodologies used to<br />

creatively resolve design problems.<br />

Subject description<br />

This subject refines design methodologies and will include<br />

product research, analysis and identification <strong>of</strong> the problem,<br />

methods for dealing with creative problem solving, removing<br />

mental blocks and clear thinking. Divergent and convergent<br />

thought processes will be examined. Areas <strong>of</strong> interest will<br />

include lateral thinking, form follows function, functionalism,<br />

association, brainstorming techniques and other<br />

methodologies. Practical exercises and discussions will<br />

consolidate these processes.<br />

Through a series <strong>of</strong> practice projects, students will be<br />

introduced to the process <strong>of</strong> design and the incorporation <strong>of</strong><br />

other design areas into this process.<br />
