General Divisional Information<br />

Due to the amalgamation <strong>of</strong> the Faculties <strong>of</strong> Arts and<br />

Business into the Division <strong>of</strong> Business, Humanities and Social<br />

Science during 1994, a number <strong>of</strong> course policies and<br />

procedures are being reviewed, and where appropriate,<br />

amalgamated.<br />

For this reason, students seeking information on course<br />

regulations such as exemptions, students at risk and progress<br />

review for 1995 should contact the Divisional <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

Reading guides<br />

In most subjects, conveners will issue detailed reading guides<br />

during the first week <strong>of</strong> classes. However, reading material is<br />

listed under individual subject entries according to the<br />

following definitions.<br />

Preliminary reading -introductory material which students<br />

are expected to read before the subject classes commence.<br />

Textbooks - material essential to the subject, but students<br />

are advised not to purchase any textbooks until classes have<br />

met.<br />

References - material referred to throughout the duration <strong>of</strong><br />

the subject. Students are not required to purchase references<br />

and copies <strong>of</strong> the majority are available for borrowing from<br />

the library.<br />

Submission <strong>of</strong> assignments<br />

Students should <strong>note</strong> that assignments will not be accepted<br />

by facsimile (fax).<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> Graduate Society<br />

<strong>of</strong> Business<br />

The Graduate Society <strong>of</strong> Business is the oldest <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> alumni chapters, having been formed in 1977<br />

from the original graduating students <strong>of</strong> the first course <strong>of</strong><br />

the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration.<br />

Now in its eighteenth year, the Society has a network <strong>of</strong> over<br />

one thousand past students, and now encompasses and<br />

supports all current and past students in the Graduate<br />

Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and Masters programs in<br />

the previous Faculty <strong>of</strong> Business - now the Division <strong>of</strong><br />

Business, Humanities and Social Science.<br />

The Society operates as an independent <strong>of</strong>ficial body,<br />

represented by a committee, and relies on members'<br />

cooperative efforts to assist the cause <strong>of</strong> industry relevant<br />

and supported further education, extension <strong>of</strong> qualifications<br />

and industry networking both internally and externally to the<br />

university.<br />

Current activities include regular newsletters, seminars,<br />

meetings and speakers, an extensive personal network,<br />

working business lunches, library membership and other<br />

benefits as part <strong>of</strong> the wider Alumni <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Annual membership is $25, with optional life membership <strong>of</strong><br />

$100, student membership <strong>of</strong> $10, and Library membership<br />

<strong>of</strong> $15.<br />

The Certificate in Commercial<br />

Radio<br />

Course aims<br />

The course aims to provide specific instruction in all aspects<br />

<strong>of</strong> radio broadcasting, with hands-on experience in<br />

announcing and news presentation. Other areas <strong>of</strong> tuition<br />

include voice training, production, copywriting, news writing<br />

and presentation, sales and promotions, music and<br />

programming, radio station management and computing<br />

skills.<br />

Broader issues are introduced, including broadcasting ethics<br />

and codes <strong>of</strong> practice, media law and ownership, the impact<br />

<strong>of</strong> information technologies, and audience research. Training<br />

is conducted in <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s modern, fully-equipped radio<br />

centre, with personal access time available to all course<br />

participants.<br />

An industry placement program will place students into<br />

metropolitan and reqional commercial radio stations for<br />

several weeks during the course. This placement program is<br />

designed to allow participants to experience at first-hand the<br />

environment and operating style <strong>of</strong> commercial radio, gain<br />

feedback on their skills, and to make personal contacts<br />

within the industry.<br />

Guest lecturers from the radio industry introduce and<br />

reinforce information presented in all areas. Regular station<br />

broadcasting from <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s studios develop skills in<br />

programming, writing, production and presentation.<br />

Participants in the course will have access to other courses<br />

run in Media Studies at <strong>Swinburne</strong>, including media criticism<br />

and public policy.<br />

Course structure<br />

Successful completion <strong>of</strong> the Certificate in Commercial Radio<br />

requires students to pass the following eight subjects:<br />

Advertising Copywriting<br />

Radio Advertising Production<br />

~060 Associate Degree in Social Science<br />

The Associate Degree in Social Science is accredited and<br />

awarded by <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>. The course<br />

is provided by Billanook College, Mooroolbark; Glenfern<br />

College, Ferntree Gully and Heathmont College, Heathmont<br />

in affiliation with <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>. The<br />

course is also <strong>of</strong>fered at Centralian College, Alice Springs<br />

(NT).<br />

Graduating students will be prepared for a number <strong>of</strong><br />

occuoations within a ranae <strong>of</strong> administrative and service<br />

empioyment positions, ina variety <strong>of</strong> employment contexts.<br />
