Subject aims and description<br />
This subject continues systematically to extend the students'<br />
use <strong>of</strong> spoken and written Japanese. Emphasis is placed on<br />
the correct use <strong>of</strong> an extended variety <strong>of</strong> syntactical and<br />
lexical items, colloquial and idiomatic expressions,<br />
intonations, etc., appropriate to a given situation and speech<br />
level. The aural and the reading components are integrated<br />
with each other to reinforce the students' knowledge.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />
This subject consolidates all language skills acquired in<br />
previous stages <strong>of</strong> the Advanced Japanese major.Three<br />
modules (for instance 'Dietary Life in Japan', 'Education in<br />
Japan' and similar) form the basis for extensive reading <strong>of</strong><br />
reference literature, writing <strong>of</strong> reports in Japanese and oral<br />
class presentation in Japanese. Students will spend<br />
approximately 66 hours per semester in class and the<br />
remaining 18 hours conducting field work among the<br />
Japanese community in Melbourne. Classwork will be utilised<br />
for reading or reference material, lectures by specialists in the<br />
particular research area (Ja~anese) and discussion/debates <strong>of</strong><br />
the field work findings (in Japanese).<br />
