Standard subject<br />

A program <strong>of</strong> study by whatever name known, within a<br />

particular discipline which is recorded in a register <strong>of</strong> subjects<br />

maintained by the Academic Registrar. A subject has a unique<br />

code number and a title and normally will have a result<br />

produced, published and recorded on the student's record. Its<br />

duration and relationship to the program is determined by the<br />

appropriate School and notified to the Academic Registrar.<br />

Student Administration Office<br />

Room AD109 in the Administration Building on the Hawthorn<br />

Campus; Building F on the Prahran Campus and Building A on<br />

the Mooroolbark campus.<br />

Student<br />

A person who is enrolled in any subject or subjects <strong>of</strong>fered by<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> whether formally enrolled<br />

for a formal qualification or not. The term 'student' in these<br />

procedures can also refer to a group <strong>of</strong> students.<br />

Subject panel<br />

A panel <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong> the academic staff <strong>of</strong> the Higher<br />

Education Division <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong><br />

established under section 4 <strong>of</strong> these procedures.<br />

Teaching Divisional Board<br />

The board <strong>of</strong> the Division within which a teaching division1<br />

school responsible for the teaching <strong>of</strong> a particular subject is<br />

located.<br />

2. The objectives <strong>of</strong> assessment<br />

These procedures shall, in any question <strong>of</strong> interpretation, be<br />

read subject to the following objectives:<br />

2.1 For the purpose <strong>of</strong> these procedures the main<br />

functions <strong>of</strong> assessment are:<br />

2.1.1 the facilitation <strong>of</strong> learning which includes<br />

such matters as:<br />

a) helping to establish learning situations<br />

appropriate to the needs, abilities and<br />

potential <strong>of</strong> the individual student;<br />

b) enabling the diagnosis and alleviation <strong>of</strong><br />

specific learning difficulties;<br />

C) motivating and directing learning<br />

experiences; and<br />

d) developing and maintaining skills and<br />

abilities;<br />

2.1.2 the certification <strong>of</strong> the level <strong>of</strong> achievement<br />

which students have reached in subjects<br />

andlor courses at <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Technology</strong>;<br />

2.1.3 assistance with the evaluation and review<br />

<strong>of</strong> program content and objectives;<br />

2.1.4 assistance with the evaluation and review<br />

<strong>of</strong> methods <strong>of</strong> instruction.<br />

3. Forms <strong>of</strong> assessment<br />

Without limiting the generality here<strong>of</strong>, assessment <strong>of</strong> students<br />

enrolled in a subject may be undertaken using any one or more<br />

<strong>of</strong> the following:<br />

3.1 examination at the conclusion <strong>of</strong> the subject;<br />

3.2 formal or informal tests conducted at any time<br />

from the commencement <strong>of</strong> the subject to the end<br />

<strong>of</strong> the examination period;<br />

3.3 assignment, project work, field work, essay, report<br />

or such other activities as the subject panel shall<br />

require.<br />

4. Subject panels<br />

4.1 For each subject for which a result is required<br />

there shall be a subject panel (hereafter called the<br />

panel) comprising at least two members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

academic staff <strong>of</strong> the Higher Education Divisions<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>.<br />

4.2 The panel shall be appointed by the appropriate<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> the School not later than the end <strong>of</strong> the<br />

second week <strong>of</strong> the semester in which teach~ng <strong>of</strong><br />

the subject commences for that particular year.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the members <strong>of</strong> the panel shall be<br />

designated Convener.<br />

4.3 For subjects where the awarding Division is not<br />

also the teaching division, the Pro Vice-Chancellor<br />

<strong>of</strong> the awarding Division, may nominate one<br />

person to each such panel.<br />

4.4 The names <strong>of</strong> the subject panel members shall be<br />

reported to the Divisional Boards for noting, in the<br />

case <strong>of</strong> subjects commencing in the first semester,<br />

no later than the April meeting <strong>of</strong> the Divisional<br />

Boards and, in the case <strong>of</strong> subjects commencing<br />

in the second semester, no later than the August<br />

meeting <strong>of</strong> the Divisional Boards.<br />

4.5 The panel shall, subject to these procedures:<br />

4.5.1 determine, prior to the issue <strong>of</strong> the first<br />

assessment <strong>of</strong> the year for the subject, the<br />

form or forms <strong>of</strong> assessment to be used;<br />

4.5.2 determine the assessment categories to be<br />

used for the particular semester or year;<br />

4.5.3 ensure that each panel member and each<br />

person teaching the subject is familiar with<br />

the content and objectives <strong>of</strong> the subject;<br />

4.5.4 determine the minimum standards which a<br />

student must reach or specific work which<br />

a student must complete in order to be<br />

notified to a Divisional Board as a passing<br />

candidate in the subject;<br />

4.5.5 ensure that a written statement <strong>of</strong> the<br />

requirements <strong>of</strong> assessment is prepared for<br />

all students enrolled in and attending the<br />

subject, no later than the end <strong>of</strong> the second<br />

week <strong>of</strong> teaching. This statement should<br />

include:<br />

the aims and objectives <strong>of</strong> the subject<br />

the methods <strong>of</strong> assessment;<br />

the allocation <strong>of</strong> marks, if any, for subject<br />

participation and minimum attendance;<br />

details, if relevant, <strong>of</strong> the penalties for<br />

work handed in after the stated<br />

submission date;<br />

relevant information concerning what is<br />

considered acceptable in terms <strong>of</strong> essay,<br />

assignment andlor report formats, as<br />

applicable;<br />

a request that students who have special<br />

needs or disabilities who may require<br />

special requirements or arrangements to<br />

contact their Divisional <strong>of</strong>fice;
