ContactIActivities Department<br />
This department is a sub-unit <strong>of</strong> the Contact Centre and the<br />
responsibility <strong>of</strong> the Activities Office. In conjunction with the<br />
management committee the Activities Office develops,<br />
organises and presents the social programs for the year. This<br />
unit works closely with Clubs and Societies in order to promote<br />
activities jointly between clubs and the Union. The Activities<br />
Office is located at The Corner Cafe.<br />
Clubs and societies<br />
Another sub-unit <strong>of</strong> Contact, the Clubs and Societies <strong>of</strong>fice is<br />
located in the Contact Centre. This unit's responsibility is to<br />
promote the involvement <strong>of</strong> students in the <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />
community through participation in groups with a common<br />
interest. The Clubs and Societies <strong>of</strong>fice will assist with queries<br />
regarding the starting <strong>of</strong> clubs, affiliation and support with<br />
resources.<br />
Union Bus<br />
The Student Union provides a Toyota Hiace (12 seater) van for<br />
use by clubs and societies for their functions if required.<br />
Bookings can only be made at the Contact Desk. It serves as a<br />
night bus to transport students (after daylight hours) to their<br />
respective place <strong>of</strong> residence or vehicles. This eliminates the risk<br />
<strong>of</strong> harm to the majority <strong>of</strong> women students who utilise this<br />
service.<br />
Orientation week<br />
Orientation occurs during the first week <strong>of</strong> academic classes.<br />
During orientation a diversity <strong>of</strong> entertainment is provided to<br />
encourage students to become involved and participate in the<br />
campus activities. Orientation week provides the opportunity for<br />
students to familiarise themselves with services and the new<br />
<strong>University</strong> studying environment and to build support networks<br />
and confidence. It facilitates the establishing <strong>of</strong> friendships with<br />
other new and returning students. A program <strong>of</strong> activities for<br />
the week is available prior to the commencement <strong>of</strong><br />
Orientation.<br />
Contactlinformation desk<br />
The Contact/lnformation Desk located in the Contact Centre is<br />
the 'nerve centre' <strong>of</strong> the Student Union for information on Union<br />
services, activities and coming events - in effect a directory <strong>of</strong><br />
all Union services. Students will find a 'Friendly Contact Worker'<br />
who will provide assistance on how to survive at <strong>Swinburne</strong>. The<br />
desk also has listings <strong>of</strong> various <strong>of</strong>f-campus groups which you<br />
may wish to become involved with.<br />
The Desk operates as the ticket sales point for Union activities.<br />
and sells T-shirts, windcheaters, and other Union memorabilia.<br />
The Australian Buying Advisory Service (ABAS) is available at no<br />
charge to students. This service guarantees that the price you<br />
have been quoted is in fact an unbeatable <strong>of</strong>fer. So if you are<br />
considering buying a camera, television, stereo, etc., see us.<br />
Reading room/photocopying sewice<br />
The room is designed for quiet reading and discussion, in a nonsmoking<br />
environment. Newspapers, magazines and information<br />
on various groups, issues and organisations are located in this<br />
area. Also located adjacent to the lounge are a bank <strong>of</strong><br />
photocopiers. The copiers produce good quality A3/A4 copies at<br />
a very competitive price. It is located in the Contact Centre.<br />
Tool library<br />
The Tool Library is located in the Contact Centre, telephone<br />
214 8291. As the library is a non-pr<strong>of</strong>it operation, its hire rates<br />
are very reasonable (I/, <strong>of</strong> the retail price!). All equipment hire<br />
requires a deposit and studentlstaff ID. Library catalogues are<br />
available from the Contacblnformation Desk, Tool Library and<br />
the Union Office.<br />
Equipment available includes: lawn mowers, mulchers, engine<br />
tune-up kit, arc welder, brush-cutters, wallpaper remover, auto<br />
tools, orbital sanders, percussion drills, belt sanders, barbeques,<br />
PA system, tents and rucksacks.<br />
Radio station<br />
3SSR - <strong>Swinburne</strong> Student Radio.<br />
Location: fourth level <strong>of</strong> the Union Building.<br />
The Radio Station is run by a committee which consists <strong>of</strong>:<br />

3SSR provides students with a variety <strong>of</strong> music and other<br />
programs which are broadcast to a number <strong>of</strong> outlets. Students<br />
are involved in various activities at the station including<br />
production <strong>of</strong> 'on air' programs (DJ'ing) and the general running,<br />
management and organisation <strong>of</strong> station activities.<br />
Facilities at 3SSR include a comprehensive record library,<br />
cartridge production facilities, an 'on air' broadcast studio, and<br />
various related equipment including an eight-channel mixing<br />
desk, a four-track reel-to-reel, a half-track mastering reel-to-reel<br />
and an assortment <strong>of</strong> microphones and leads.<br />
Anyone interested in becoming involved in 3SSR activities<br />
should contact one <strong>of</strong> the committee members in the radio<br />
station <strong>of</strong>fices located on the fourth level <strong>of</strong> the Union Building.<br />
Catering Department<br />
The Greenhouse C<strong>of</strong>fee Lounge<br />
Situated on the third level <strong>of</strong> the Union Building, this is a<br />
comfortable and popular lounge specialising in cappucinos, hot<br />
chocolates and herbal teas. The Greenhouse serves quality cakes<br />
and pastries and lunchtime specials <strong>of</strong> pasta, gourmet open pies,<br />
quiches and salads. Ideal for those who want strong c<strong>of</strong>fee, a<br />
quiet chat and an absence <strong>of</strong> large crowds. Seats 100.<br />

The Ethel Caf<br />
The largest cafeteria on campus, the Ethel is located on the third<br />
level <strong>of</strong> the Union Building adjacent to the C<strong>of</strong>fee Lounge. This<br />
cafeteria provides a large variety <strong>of</strong> hot and cold meals, a variety<br />
<strong>of</strong> vegetarian dishes and a chef who will cheerfully cater for an<br />
individual's special diet needs.<br />
The Ethel has the table space for large groups <strong>of</strong> students to<br />
chat over c<strong>of</strong>fee or lunch. Seats 300.<br />
