Entrance requirements<br />
Applicants must hold a degree or diploma from an approved<br />
tertiary institution, including major studies in at least one <strong>of</strong><br />
sociology, politics, economics, geography, planning or<br />
contemDorarv history. Students with majors in discipline other<br />
than thbse liited may also be considered.<br />
Course structure<br />
The course entails one year <strong>of</strong> full-time study or two years<br />
part-time study, involving six semester subjects and a<br />
research report. Each subject usually involves three hours <strong>of</strong><br />
class meetings per week for one semester.<br />

Each student is expected to complete a research report<br />
relating to either policy issues or some aspect <strong>of</strong> urban policy<br />
and planning or community development. Where possible,<br />
research is developed in cooperation with government<br />
departments, consultancy firms, community groups and<br />
research institutes.<br />
~089 Graduate Diploma in Writing<br />
The Graduate Diploma in Writing is designed to introduce<br />
students to the range <strong>of</strong> skills required <strong>of</strong> a pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
writer.<br />
The course is designed for those who intend to work (or are<br />
already working) in fields which require a high competence in<br />
written communication, e.g. writers in commerce, industry<br />
and community groups, or freelance writers. Specifically, the<br />
course is desianed to provide both a theoretical base and a<br />
range <strong>of</strong> skill;applicable to a wide range <strong>of</strong> writing activities;<br />
to provide knowledge <strong>of</strong> and experience in the analysis <strong>of</strong><br />
writing; to provide experience in presentation and marketing<br />
<strong>of</strong> manuscripts; to provide students with the practical and<br />
theoretical ability to undertake a substantial piece <strong>of</strong><br />
independent writing.<br />
Entrance requirements<br />

institution, or a qualification approved as equivalent, or<br />
equivalent experience.<br />
Course structure<br />
The course entails two semesters <strong>of</strong> full-time study or four<br />
semesters part-time. The graduate diploma consists <strong>of</strong> six<br />
subjects: two core subjects (AL400 and AL401) and four<br />
elective subjects. The two core subjects involve two hours per<br />
fortnight over two semesters. Each elective subject involves<br />
three hours <strong>of</strong> course work per week per semester.<br />

Career potential<br />
This course is designed to prepare pr<strong>of</strong>essionals who, being<br />
more extensively educated in management <strong>of</strong> enterprise and<br />
innovation, are able to take up management positions more<br />
quickly after graduation, become more innovative in their<br />
leadership <strong>of</strong> Australian enterprise, have and achieve<br />
heightened goals, are more able to improve their individual<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional practices and hence are more likely to contribute<br />
significantly to their work, their pr<strong>of</strong>ession, the economy and<br />
society.<br />
Studies include the environmental and social impacts <strong>of</strong><br />
successful pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice, personal skills such as<br />
speaking, negotiating, communicating, team working and<br />
leadership as well as the more conventional business,<br />
financial and marketing studies.<br />
The coursework and the case studies at graduate level relate<br />
management principles and practice particularly to the<br />
technology learnt during an undergraduate course.<br />
Admission requirements<br />
(a) The completion <strong>of</strong> a degree <strong>of</strong> diploma together with at<br />
least two years industrial experience.<br />
(b) The completion <strong>of</strong> the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Engineering or<br />
Bachelor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong> degree <strong>of</strong>fered by the Division <strong>of</strong><br />
Science, Engineering and Design at <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />
undertaken as an industry based learning program<br />
incorporating integrated periods <strong>of</strong> industrial experience.<br />
(c) The completion <strong>of</strong> another Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Engineering<br />
degree together with at least two years <strong>of</strong> relevant work<br />
experience at a suitable level <strong>of</strong> responsibility within an<br />
engineering field after completion <strong>of</strong> the degree.<br />
(d) A limited number <strong>of</strong> applicants not meeting the above<br />
criteria may be admitted after interview on the basis <strong>of</strong><br />
considerable relevant experience and level <strong>of</strong><br />
responsibility in industry or business.<br />
Duration <strong>of</strong> course<br />
The course is undertaken by one year <strong>of</strong> full-time study or<br />
two and a half years <strong>of</strong> part-time study. The course, when<br />
combined with the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Engineering, or Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Technology</strong>, requires only a further six months full-time or one<br />
and a half years part-time, after the completion <strong>of</strong> the four<br />
and a half year degree.<br />
In its combined mode, the course will <strong>of</strong>fer a 'fast-track' to<br />
management education for graduates <strong>of</strong> Engineering at<br />
<strong>Swinburne</strong>.<br />
Course structure<br />
Wherever possible session presentations maximise application<br />
<strong>of</strong> 'pracademia', where subjects are team-taught by<br />
academics and practitioners to ensure focus is squarely fixed<br />
on current management practice.<br />
