7/7/7 was said on the radio that afternoon, to be a very
auspicious day for weddings! Mind you, the same report said
that 8/8/8 would be even more astrologically auspicious!
However it marked an important start to a fun-filled month for
me, for a total change – that day I bumped into Julie, the new
neighbour from number 26, on the way back from the shops,
and we chatted for a full ten minutes. It was a lovely day just
for once that Summer, and it was my first chance to talk to her
apart from the earlier embarrassment of the fire at my flat,
weeks earlier. She turned out to be 48, ‘just the right age’,
rather than the 35 or so she seemed when I had occasionally
glimpsed her out of the window, coming to and from her small
gold car – which I totally wrongly had assumed had meant she
must have a decent job and salary. She turned out later to
work part time for an absolute pittance, and got a third of my
own inadequate benefit! She was looking for another job quite
intensively as a result. I had been woken up that bright
morning by the sounds of the annual fete in the park opposite,
and went there later – without Julie – and it was all kids’ stuff!
I was very taken by Julie’s good looks, her elfin face with
puckered lower lip, set in collar length very naturally curly
reddish brown hair (I had never gone out with a redhead
before!) Above all her 5’6” frame, an ideal height for me at my
6’2”, contained a slim but curvaceous, perfectly sexy figure. So
the following day I pursued this first meeting and took round
my books to her flat to show her what I had been talking about,
and she looked at them in her doorway. She had had a couple
of drinks and was in her dressing gown. A couple of hours later
I pursued matters further and went round to her flat, told her I
was expecting to receive over two thousand pounds in the next
week or two – could she take me shopping in her car as I had
none? I was so surprised to be answered ‘yes, of course’
almost immediately that as I left, as the weekend was still
sunny, I asked her out for a drink that evening ‘in a pub with a
garden in Ware’. Again she said yes, and an hour or so later,
after finding the “Saracen’s Head” and the “Navigator” both had
full gardens, we found that the “Victoria” had a nearly empty
garden – so had two drinks there.
I write now over six weeks later on the night of
Wednesday 22 nd August. I have neglected this diary till now, as
Julie’s part time job that she desperately wants to replace by a
