oken off his holiday <strong>in</strong> Crete and leav<strong>in</strong>g his family <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

Shortly <strong>after</strong> that Mum had clearly lapsed <strong>in</strong>to unconsciousness,<br />

once <strong>the</strong> nurse gave her one <strong>in</strong>jection and <strong>the</strong>n adm<strong>in</strong>istered<br />

<strong>the</strong> slow <strong>in</strong>jection of morph<strong>in</strong>e etc. through a huge syr<strong>in</strong>ge.<br />

Just before 7pm Helen and Rodney were wait<strong>in</strong>g outside. There<br />

was no po<strong>in</strong>t Jeni and I stay<strong>in</strong>g any fur<strong>the</strong>r now that Mum had<br />

been unconscious for ten m<strong>in</strong>utes, so we went to catch <strong>the</strong><br />

Warren <strong>Street</strong> Tube back to Hertfordshire via Tottenham Hale<br />

and <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e tra<strong>in</strong>, leav<strong>in</strong>g Dad, Jem and Libby to stay <strong>the</strong><br />

night on <strong>the</strong> floor of Mum’s room, keep<strong>in</strong>g vigil. Helen, Jeni<br />

and Rodney got off at Cheshunt <strong>after</strong> a 20 m<strong>in</strong>ute break at <strong>the</strong><br />

tube station, where Jeni had a sandwich while we waited for <strong>the</strong><br />

tra<strong>in</strong> to Ware. Their car was parked at Cheshunt; I cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

on <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r few stops to Ware.<br />

I was awoken at 10am <strong>the</strong> <strong>next</strong> day, Thursday, by my<br />

daughter <strong>with</strong> some garbled but excited news. She had got her<br />

GCSE results <strong>after</strong> go<strong>in</strong>g to her Presdales school <strong>in</strong> Ware, and<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were MUCH better than expected. She rattled off <strong>the</strong><br />

results so fast I could not take <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> while still wak<strong>in</strong>g up,<br />

but later ga<strong>the</strong>red when my Fa<strong>the</strong>r rang about <strong>the</strong>m, that she<br />

got all of four A grades, and an A* even, <strong>in</strong> English literature to<br />

jo<strong>in</strong> A’s <strong>in</strong> English language, chemistry, biology, and bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

studies. Then <strong>the</strong>re were three B’s – and C grades <strong>in</strong> physics<br />

and French, which I knew she did not like. Still she got ten<br />

good grades, five of <strong>the</strong>m excellent, at GCSE, I later learned<br />

better than her cous<strong>in</strong> Kar<strong>in</strong>a, Jem’s daughter – excellent for<br />

<strong>the</strong> daughter of divorced parents! More good news <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> midst<br />

of a tragedy <strong>with</strong> Mum came <strong>with</strong> Julie’s job <strong>in</strong>terview <strong>in</strong><br />

Welwyn Garden City at 3.30pm. I welcomed her back com<strong>in</strong>g<br />

out of her car <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> news that <strong>the</strong>y had immediately offered<br />

her 10 hours a week, and were very keen to raise this to 20<br />

hours one-on-one work a week as soon as possible, followed by<br />

full-time work. She had previously done several elapsed years<br />

work <strong>in</strong> old people’s homes, and was very pleased at <strong>the</strong> offer<br />

of one-on-one work. That same <strong>after</strong>noon while she had been<br />

at <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview I had sorted out a major electronic problem<br />

<strong>with</strong> my submission <strong>with</strong> emails to and from Sophia magaz<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Then that even<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> excitement was short-lived, when Dad<br />

rang to say <strong>the</strong>y had seen <strong>the</strong> Consultant that morn<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

she had said <strong>in</strong> her lengthy experience, Mum was <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last<br />
