Nit was unemployed on and off for years until Debbie moved in
and he started a relationship with her. However, she had
business connections, enabling him to get a series of
increasingly good jobs. However they always argued, and after
she moved out to Julie’s old flat and he had decorated it and
equipped it for her, last year she cut off all contact with her and
their baby son. Nit lost his job through self confessed ‘panic
attacks’ last autumn at about the same time that Julie lost
hers. However he did small bits of piece work as well as
borrowing money from friends and family, and the first of these
might explain why he never got paid any job seeker’s allowance
until recently, unlike Julie, so got no benefits – absolutely no
money for months. Also he showed me late last year a
statement from the Housing Association showing well over
£3,000 of rent arrears. He gambles on the horses. Had he
simply gambled away over £3,000 of rent money in the four
years on the statement? I will probably never find out now!
Anyhow, as a direct result of this vast amount of rent arrears
that he had built up, apparently with little question from the
Housing Association, they had now issued eviction threats
against him!
Nit pestered me constantly from shortly after starting to have
no money apart from piece work, certainly no JSA unlike Julie,
who unlike him would never ‘cheat the system’ – which I am
certain now looking back, was the suspicion in the minds of the
JSA or Job Seeker’s Allowance Department at Hertford and
Watford. Mostly for cigarettes or to spend ages on his
‘Facebook’ Internet page – rather childishly for a thirtysomething
– or to phone up yet again for information about his
backdated JSA, which must have reached well over £1,000 by
May. In January he did not ask me to my face, but strangely
left me a note through my door asking for my bank details,
saying that was now the only way left he could get paid his
lump sum of backdated JSA. Foolishly, I gave him the details,
but after several days there was no large sum of money
appearing in my account, very strangely no contact at all from
Nit; and finally a very strange phone call from a man with an
Asian accent falsely claiming to be from Barclays Bank, with
