urgently, fell on deaf ears, I resolved not to ask any <strong>more</strong> while<br />

I was here, as it was po<strong>in</strong>tless.<br />

I went to <strong>the</strong> graphics shop <strong>in</strong> WGC town centre and left my<br />

only two papers left to be bound (I had f<strong>in</strong>ished off pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>m on Sunday) and picked <strong>the</strong>m up <strong>next</strong> day. I bought some<br />

batteries for my portable radio/CD walkman, some coke and<br />

tobacco, <strong>in</strong> Sa<strong>in</strong>sbury’s. F<strong>in</strong>ally I bought a cheap phone, under<br />

£3, <strong>in</strong> Argos, but when it did not work when plugged <strong>in</strong> back at<br />

<strong>the</strong> (god) helpusall, took it back <strong>next</strong> day when collect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g and got a slightly <strong>more</strong> expensive replacement – which<br />

did work, which eventually as we see when I got two weeks’<br />

leave I was to take home – to give to Julie <strong>in</strong> case she ever<br />

could afford to get a Virg<strong>in</strong> Media phone landl<strong>in</strong>e like m<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>in</strong> a long trip to <strong>the</strong> library <strong>in</strong> town, I looked up <strong>the</strong><br />

phone numbers, usernames and passwords of three free ISP<br />

Internet companies, who gave a much faster and <strong>more</strong> reliable<br />

service than currently used at <strong>the</strong> (god) helpusall ward. I<br />

<strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>the</strong>se phone dial up services, all about three times<br />

faster than <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al at 110 kilobaud, on my return to <strong>the</strong><br />

ward. W<strong>in</strong>dows had stopped work<strong>in</strong>g on one PC, and us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

screwdriver and allen key I had just about managed to be<br />

allowed to use <strong>with</strong> discretion on <strong>the</strong> ward, reseated all <strong>the</strong><br />

cables several times <strong>in</strong> each of <strong>the</strong> two PC’s – especially <strong>the</strong><br />

hard disk – and <strong>in</strong>deed W<strong>in</strong>dows <strong>in</strong>stalled quickly off my disk<br />

when I re<strong>in</strong>stalled it on <strong>the</strong> second PC. However it would not<br />

activate on ei<strong>the</strong>r – I had run out of activations by Microsoft –<br />

so for several days <strong>after</strong> that a balloon kept popp<strong>in</strong>g up on both<br />

say<strong>in</strong>g ‘so many days left to activate’ – I worried about this, for<br />

<strong>after</strong> <strong>the</strong> month was up <strong>with</strong>out be<strong>in</strong>g activated <strong>in</strong> that time,<br />

<strong>the</strong> W<strong>in</strong>dows XP on each PC would self-destruct! A phone<br />

message to MIND ask<strong>in</strong>g for a full copy of W<strong>in</strong>dows XP fell on<br />

deaf ears, <strong>with</strong> no reply, so I carried on worry<strong>in</strong>g about how to<br />

activate <strong>the</strong> PCs’ copies of W<strong>in</strong>dows, but meanwhile <strong>the</strong><br />

mach<strong>in</strong>es both worked much faster, and <strong>more</strong> quietly and<br />

reliably, for a quick easy cable service, not done before <strong>in</strong> years<br />

at least! That even<strong>in</strong>g one Jim appeared on <strong>the</strong> ward who I<br />

had met <strong>in</strong> Abbey Ward <strong>in</strong> 2004!<br />

On Tuesday as I just mentioned I picked up my bound papers<br />

for £5 – a lot <strong>more</strong> than a better job <strong>with</strong> metal not plastic<br />
