arbecue in the communal garden on the Wednesday night, of
sausages and whole chicken sides.
Thursday was quite stressful, just two days before my holiday
was due to start that Saturday. I had been having a rather
intensive email conversation these last two weeks with Hajni of
Substance Books, which now she complained of as being ‘too
much pressure’ especially as I had not yet paid them! Then
more bad news when I rang Ron Upton, the Resources Manager
at the diocesan office at St Albans, who informed me after all
this waiting for a decision, that he had indeed now read my
book, but “it would not sell any copies in my resource centre”!
Likewise when I rang the Christian Publisher, Christian Focus,
they said it would take a further three weeks or so to get
around to reviewing my book. I had written to them back in
April, and been told as long ago as June that they would have
an editorial meeting including it in August. Now, apparently,
that editorial meeting had failed to include it after four whole
months of waiting! Finally that day, my daughter Jeni had
some good news – she had passed her driving test, and yes,
she could look after my cat ‘Woosskatt’ while I was away! I
duly stocked up with cat food and litter, and Jeni picked up my
spare keys on the Friday.
On Friday, I duly found £753+ in my bank account from the
IET, £600 of it intended for my holiday, but my bills were
£270+, so I spent £120 of the holiday money on them. Then,
with no Social Fund grant, there was nothing for it but to pay
Substance Books £303.22 ($540 after currency conversion) and
have a subdued few days away on just £180 spending money –
including £30 return train fare – out of £600! I was desperate
both to invest in my future and have my first decent break
away from home since 1992 – that is, in 16 years! Another
£20 of holiday money went on vital mobile top-up.
Then on Saturday, mid-afternoon, I took the train to Tottenham
Hale, had a cigarette, got the tube to Victoria station, another
cigarette or two, and finally got the 17:17 to Haywards Heath
in Sussex; all planned on the national rail web site; where my
Father duly met me. He took me straight to my brother’s
house for a barbecue with their family. We played with Jordan
