6. Finances. Finances in hospital had been easy, what with
an £1140 community care grant coming midway, given
because I had only just been discharged from hospital –
only to be re-admitted. I rang Income Support on
Wednesday 4 th June, immediately I was discharged, and
asked for weekly payments of all my benefits. I was told
they would be ‘combined’ in this way after Monday 7 th
July. However after I waited all that time only two of
them had been combined, income support and incapacity
benefit, so I asked again for weekly payments, this time in
two letters, now having being told I had to write in, to DLA
at Preston, and Watford Job Centre. Indeed I have been
paid IS/IB on a Saturday and DLA on Wednesday, both
weekly, for weeks now. In the meantime all the confusion
over all this bureaucracy caused me my only real problem
with non-payment of benefit when I expected to be paid,
which happened on Saturday 12 th July. I had to survive
till the Friday, when I was due a small payment into my
account from a pension fund, and as we saw before Julie
helped with an early payment of £46.27 she owed me, on
the Saturday. Then Cygnet House lent me £30 on the
Monday. Finally Frank, an artist friend, paid me £10 for a
hardback copy of my poems at the MIND drop-in on
Wednesday! I am now cruising along with regular weekly
income; not most fortnightly, with DLA paid every four
weeks. The latter non-weekly and non–monthly
arrangement makes it much harder to budget! Now I am
waiting to hear about my application this week for a
Community Care Grant, which I am entitled to having
been in hospital again, having claimed a first CCG after
the first admission! I should hear the outcome and
receive any money out of the approx. £1300 I have
applied for, that I have actually been awarded, in two
weeks or so.
