In between these spells of work Julie is busy at home having a
welcome unpaid break, seeing her family, getting some
welcome sleep, catching up on the housework, and luckily for
me, giving me increasing time with her the last three times at
home! I next caught sight of her outside her car offloading her
bags, when I was going for my first appointment with Dr
Pathmanandam at Cygnet House down the road on Wednesday
18 th June – but she seemed to totally ignore me, so I only went
round to see her on the Friday evening! Then I asked her out
for a drink to catch up on things and where our friendship now
stood! At first she said people might see us and report us to
her employers, but I pointed out that her employers were
based in Harlow, miles from here, and nobody here knew our
situation – or us! So we ended up having a pleasant two hour
two drink stint at the ‘Victoria’ pub – where our first drink had
been last year – once more mostly in the garden of the pub.
Julie spied a new Belgian cake shop, so while she was out with
her Mum the next day, Saturday, I bought some expensive
Belgian cakes for us both – and her father, who she was seeing
on Sunday – and took them round to her when she got back
from her mother’s about 10pm on Saturday. We had a brief
chat on Sunday evening. She had seen advertised in the East
Herts District Council’s ‘Home Options’ choice based lettings
newsletter a one-bedroom house in Little Amwell, a local
village, and been told for some complex reason it would
‘reappear in due course’. She hoped to move there.
There was a “scientists’ church” near her client’s house near
Berkhamsted in Buckinghamshire – could I give her a copy of
my book and she would drop it into them with a letter? Our
relationship was definitely off! I hardly saw her any more that
weekend – then she was back to work on Wednesday 25 th June
– still with no notion given to me of her address or telephone
number! Now that she and I were back in friendship mode, she
did ring while away. On Thursday 26 th June she rang to confirm
she had posted a letter at the Scientists’ Church.
On Monday 30 th June she called again to say the house at Little
Amwell temporarily at least, had been taken off the list of
houses for bidding by the Council, they had told her on the
