not the even more massive 29.7% charged by Black Horse. As
soon as my Virgin card PIN number arrived on Thursday 29 th
January, I asked for £2,000 to be transferred from Virgin to my
bank account, to pay off the loan as soon as it cleared. This
£2000 cleared on the Tuesday 3 rd February and I immediately
phoned Black Horse – who had previously quoted more than
the loan actual value to clear it – actually they wanted
£2,054.56! I complained bitterly that this was much higher
than the actual original £2,000 loan – and their woman
sympathised, and asked her manager, who immediately
dropped it substantially to £1,900! I promptly paid this by
debit card – so my bank balance shot up £2,000 and down
£1,900 within a couple of hours!
My card itself had arrived on the Saturday 31 st January, and
after activating it, I changed the PIN number up town at an
ATM. Then that week, as this last week (the latter because it
was Valentine’s Day on the Saturday 14 th ) cash demands on my
benefits were extremely high. So I bought some groceries and
cigarettes over the weekend at the supermarket. Since then,
like my Littlewoods account before this, tempted by all this
instant spending power, and possibly excessively hopeful about
my credit card charge refunds, still to come of course, I have
gone on to buy more at the supermarket, especially cigarettes.
However I have also spent quite a few hundreds on ‘capital
investments’ – things that I have something to show for. Total
spending in the first two weeks of having the card then, with
me having virtually stopped since for a week, was as follows: -

• £54.21 in the first week and £24.75 in the second week at
the supermarket – total £78.86
• £8 (with £7 cash spend on top) on lottery scratch-cards in
the first week and £5 (£11) in the second week.
• £63.45 tobacco in the first week and £82.00 in the second
week.
• Meal at Italian restaurant with Julie - £33.00 – and lunch
£7 – in first week. Valentine’s day – £60 meal, £10 roses,
£11 lottery scratch cards – second week.
