lift back to the hospital, so I could carry my heavy bags
with clothes, toiletries and cleaning kit…
2. I was now mostly back in the Ward, so used my mobile
phone a lot. I started to suffer from the tedium of hospital
life once more, and to go slowly under…
3. In particular a tiny little man of just 5’2” kept pestering
everybody with boasts about his fortune of nearly
£500,000, which for some reason he could not get access
to, so struggled financially like most of us. It turned out
he was extremely manic with compound manic depression
of some sort; and the money was mostly ‘ill gotten gains’
– from some kind of life of crime in the past! While ill, this
did not stop him offering me ever increasing sums of
money for some part of the rights to my books – even
though he never read them! Eventually, tempted while ill
myself by his latest offer of £20,000 cash for 20% of the
right to my books, I rang Julie and she picked him and me
up on Friday 14 th December, and took us to his bank in a
nearby town 15 miles away. He was so ill he screwed
everything up, and only managed to get out £1,200 for
himself. On the way there Julie had noticed a screeching
sound from the brakes, and was told by a Kwik Fit man
that he needed £140 to change the pads. She had been
running that car with no servicing for three years, and
could not possibly afford this bill on her miniscule £4,800 a
year salary. Then a garage back at Ware, after she drove
slowly and carefully back, said not to worry – it had just
been a stone! After THAT she had to go to work, in the
dark, so I got the bus back the hospital, totally let down
but luckily so, as it turned out. Meanwhile Paul got a taxi
with some of his £1,200, and only got back to the ward
after midnight – it turned out he had drunk a bottle of
brandy in a pub – and got blind drunk!
4. On the Thursday 20 th December Julie and I sat on my
computer yet again at home, trying to find me a car
around £500 to buy with my loan, now arrived. Suddenly
Julie found a 15 year old but very low mileage Rover
214GSi, in good condition, at a garage in Hitchin, 20 miles
north of the hospital by train. I rang and got directions,
returned to the hospital, caught the bus then the train to
the garage next day, tried the car out, liked it and bought
