first of two phone calls that same evening, both of which turned
out to be distressing. The first really caught me out! I had
been fretting for weeks about my phone bill being extortionate
– over £110 for the month. I got a cold call from two Asian
mobile phone salesman, and got taken in that £35 a month for
£750 ‘free’ mobile talk minutes and unlimited texts; and a low
power £10 new broadband mobile would be a good deal. Soon
I had given them my bank account and debit card numbers,
had been told to sit and wait about a week for the goods to
arrive, and was sitting there wondering whether they ever
would, and whether I had done the right thing giving my
account and card details away to cold-calling strangers on the
telephone – who called me not vice versa!
Then in the evening about 9.45pm my daughter Jeni phoned –
and came round for a chat despite it being very late! She burst
into tears when I asked her what on Earth was wrong, and said
that she was working her guts out at present prior to retaking
her AS levels (or most of the papers at least) to get at least ‘B’
grades not the C’s she got in the Summer for biology and
business studies. She showed me a beautiful presentation for
her University application this Friday, saying she would love to
study Zoology so she could become a vet like her mother, who
had brought her up steeped in veterinary science and love of
animals. The reason she was in tears was that her ignorant
stepfather, Rodney had just bolloxed her for being ‘lazy and
useless’ – without even reading her brilliant 500 words about
her ambitions for University. I obviously consoled her by
saying ‘rise above him, that was the lecture of an ignorant
peasant’ and she went away much calmer – clutching the above
