garden for all patients – where everyone would have to go to
smoke. In the meantime, I was noted for often smoking in my
room, especially during the small hours when I could not sleep
in that very harsh, barren environment of a condemned wing!
Cygnet Wing, Blackheath Hill, London had a totally relaxed
policy by complete contrast – was it because they are a private
wing? I never needed to cheat on the smoking rules because
in my two weeks there, I never found the smoking room
locked. It was however the only such room I had ever been in
where I actively verified that because it was so remote from the
nursing office, there were cameras and a microphone there!
The Unit had no apparent plans to make all smokers go to the
enclosed garden to smoke – did they have any special
dispensation, being private?
Abbey Ward PICU, St Albans had the most well established
and rigid rules to stop communal smoking in place for many
months already – with one at a time smoking in the smoking
room. They were so rigid on rules that they even planned to
shut that room as well after 1 st July, and force all smokers to
quit or go occasionally into the garden at the back. I was again
disciplined – and my lighters and pipe confiscated – for
smoking in my room at St Albans!
