clever software package, which enabled her to completely take
over control of my father’s PC – with her in the USA! It
stopped rain late afternoon, my father got on with wiring up
power to his new conservatory at the back of the lounge, we
had a light supper – then a trip to a pub down the road, and a
quick pint.
It was raining on Tuesday morning too. It eased off again late
afternoon, so we drove out to the famous Beachy Head
headland. We had a coffee, a long walk in a strong wind along
the very high cliff – and finally one of the first ice creams of the
day that the woman in the van said she had served – it had
been so wet! It was very moving and sad on the walk on the
cliff, to come across so many crosses and flowers on the low
fence – left for suicide cases who had jumped off the cliff – to
whom one strand of fence wire was obviously a pitifully
inadequate deterrent.
On the Wednesday my father took me to the local Marks and
Spencer store, where we found to our surprise that the shelves
with the men’s denim jeans he had offered to buy me, were a
completely hopeless disorganised mess – for that famously
‘neat’ chain store! However eventually he found two pairs
which fitted me, and paid £9.50+£25 for these. After that we
made the long drive to Battle Abbey, just north of Hastings, site
of the Battle of Hastings. We paid the entrance fees, bought a
book on the site, run by English Heritage, and got free
electronic loudspeaker tour guides, for a one hour tour of the
battlefield and Abbey. Two things astonished me in particular.
Nobody knew how King Harald really died – not necessarily an
arrow in the eye, as ‘1066 and all that’ said! Secondly, William
the Conqueror built the Abbey as penance - as the battle was
so viciously bloody, there were literally ‘rivers of blood’ from
the close range hand-to-hand fighting with swords, spears,
battleaxes, and bows and arrows. We went back to my father’s
house at Hurstpierpoint by a different, shorter route that I
found on the map – and discussed the fact that the weather
was supposed to be terrible from Friday, for the whole weekend
– it had generally been pretty wet to date already! Also the
fact that my depot was due on Friday settled it – I would go
home tomorrow afternoon.
