Tuesday 23 rd June – Tuesday 7 th July 2009.
I had reached a bleak low point in my doldrums of seemingly
endlessly waiting for replies from literary agents, this first
Tuesday 23 rd June. However, the next ten days saw a veritable
whirlwind of activity all prompted by a chance discovery of a
Google Adword advert – that may well yet totally transform my
book publishing activities!
The week started off in typically ordinary fashion, with a
podiatry appointment at 2pm, where I was told that the
buildings there were to be refurbished soon, so my next several
appointments would be at the main clinic in Hertford, a bus ride
away.
Then the doldrums started when I went on a recently very rare
walk with Julie – now that she had finally started her new job.
She was not at all happy with the pay and the sloppy carryingon
of their office over the phone, she said, for one thing they
rarely got her out a rota of people to visit to care for, in the
post, in time. Then suddenly, the ‘demanding little madam’ in
Julie came out in a sudden attack on me! ‘I need to meet a
rich man. You are far from rich. All the other men in my life
had cars. You don’t even have a car to take me out’. This
demanding side sometimes came out in her; this time I was too
hurt by it to point out that I had saved her bacon many times
by giving her just enough money to get out of a pickle. First,
and the most money was involved, back in March when I gave
her all my lottery winnings and more of £60 – enough to buy
and have a battery fitted; and get her car through its MOT.
This ‘demanding little madam’ side of her seems to have been
the reason she was bankrupt when I met her – she says she
took out large loans that she could not afford in the usual
impossibly low paid job she seems to have taken a long series
of. It was back in the last week of May that we last made love
– three times in five days. Now the relationship had definitely
been put on frigid ice by her!
I returned home really very depressed – so missed going to the
Mind Club that evening. Julie like me had been poor ever since
