called Peter answered, we had a chat, and he said he would get
‘Manuela’ to call back. After several more phone calls that
afternoon and early evening, indeed at 7pm I finally got a
phone call from a Spanish-sounding lady called Manuela – who
turned out to be no less than the Managing Director of this
firm, who seem to have several offices, in Surbiton and the
West End of London in particular.
She said yes, she had received my email with book attached,
and application form, with book covers, photo of me, and
synopsis, and that normally it would take four weeks to have
my book reviewed and the necessary book review, press
release, interview text and final synopsis prepared by the
reviewer. Only then could the web site be built incorporating
these – taking about another four weeks. On Monday I would
receive an invoice for the first half of the £396, i.e. £198, from
her accountant who had obviously gone home for the weekend.
I had to raise the remaining £198 in one lump sum, or pay
monthly over six months by bank standing order. So on
Saturday 13 th September, I consulted with Julie by phone about
selling her mountain bike as well as mine in ‘Loot’, a free ads
paper, then phoned them and took out a £10 advert for the
next week. Today is Saturday 20 th September, and even
though on Wednesday I went to the supermarket and looked up
rival prices in that day’s Loot, saw they were a lot lower than
mine, so got Loot by phone, and asked them to drop them a lot
for the Friday edition – I have had no responses to the advert
all week.

As for the two bikes, I am hanging onto them, as I am not
prepared to lower the price well below what they cost just a
year ago, hardly using them yet since, what with the weather
having been very wet last summer and this summer, and Julie
having been away so much this summer. Sunday is normally a
‘day of rest’ but that Sunday 14 th September was quite frantic
