changes from haloperidol to amisulpride and back again – with
non-compliance with my lithium recently… So I was told to
pack having broken the meeting up somewhat, and did so,
went to sleep at 9.30pm, woke at 11.30 pm, then one ‘Mervyn’
arrived from Blackheath and told me to get ready for a ride to
Blackheath. Indeed it turned out to be quite a noisy, exciting
roller-coaster journey as I said…
My stay at Cygnet Wing, Blackheath Hill was only to last just
two weeks before my next transfer, back to Hertfordshire, so I
can summarise it briefly as follows: -
1. This was the only private psychiatric clinic I had ever been
a patient staying in, and soon realised just how plush and
expensive it was. There was the PICU on the second floor,
with a rehab unit on the first floor. However, very
unusually, the ground floor had a neurological damage
unit as well as a unit for brain damage injuries. It was a
medium secure unit, with quite a few criminal patients, so
there were all of four locked doors and a locked lift to get
through if anybody thought of trying to escape! The
fittings were much more expensive than your typical NHS
Ward. My room was immaculately furnished with fully
working undamaged furniture, and there was an en-suite
toilet as well as sink. The bed was comfortable – and staff
made it up for you! The carpet had a thick pile and the
room was above all meticulously clean and undamaged.
The unit had its own kitchen, with a fresh, very varied
menu, and if you chose carefully you could eat cordon bleu
– as I did throughout! The best feature was the massive
supply of fruit juice, which I thoroughly approved of as it
was a very healthy diet that I enjoyed at home too!
2. I absolutely trusted nobody on arrival – so was not too
surprised when one or more sneak thieves among the ten
patients in a 16 bed ward, went to my room at the end of
the corridor several times, and took a total of £80. Also
when I left after two weeks there, one patient owed me
£12 which obviously I never got back, so in total the stay
there cost me nearly £100 lost cash! Quite a few days of
income! The worst time, my entire wallet went missing,
which I obviously reported. That night about 3am I was
aware of a figure coming into my room, saying, ‘security!’
