that day to make sure they pressurised her to actually make
the refund real – without their usual delays.
Meanwhile I had some heartening news from Cygnet House.
When I saw their Jeni, standing in for Jemima who was on
holiday, they had surprised themselves by getting all the
£11+£11 money not only for the guitar and SLR camera
courses I wanted to take this autumn; but on top, £55 for the
guitar I needed, with case; and above all, £345 for a brand new
SLR camera! That Wednesday evening I thought I might have
had a breakthrough – I googled for ‘cheap book publicity’ and
found an advert at the top for www.resultspr.co.uk – a PR
company that seemed to only ask for money for PR (public
relations) once they got you actual financial results. I called
them, as it was late they arranged to phone me the next day;
and when I checked out THEIR credentials on Google by
searching for ‘results pr’ found out that they seemed
completely clean of any reports of similar scams to Writers
Literary Agency.
The rest of that week was very quiet. I was in a kind of
numbed shock over yet another scam – this time, very close to
home, a bogus ‘literary agency’. Yet again in the USA! Results
PR failed to phone by mid afternoon on Thursday, so I phoned
them in London – but it was as I expected – there was for me a
prohibitively high ‘communications fee’ of £240 a month to find!
I chased Vicki of www.writersliterary.com as they had still not
paid me since yesterday as promised, and as they were a scam
outfit they might not pay! However they replied they were
indeed planning to pay – and the money went on my bank card
via Paypal the next day, in fact… I again cooked a mince dish
for us both round at Julie’s that night, this time Pasta
Bolognese, which we both much enjoyed…
The next day the above refund arrived like I said, with an email
from Paypal to let me know. However, there was no sign of the
refund from the mail order company, which I had been told on
Monday had been made then. I had a long phone call to an
‘Alison’ there, who eventually rang back to say she had been
