Palabras clave: abeja, deforestación, extinción, meliponicultura, sustentabilidadTHE POPULATION DECREASE OF MELIPONIAN BEES IN YUCATÁNABSTRACTPollinators are an essential part of the process of reproduction of the flora, either the sylvan one or farmed one. Among thepollinators, bees are one of the species with the most importance because they are the pollinators which help the most flowersto be fecundated. Yucatan owns its native species of bee: the “melipona” bee, in Mayan, xunan kab, such specie has coexistedwith the inhabitants of the peninsula since the pre-Hispanic times, nevertheless, bees are nowadays going through apopulational crisis due to factors as deforestation and the climate change, which has caused that diverse varieties of bees aremore vulnerable to disappear, such on is the case of the melipona bee. In Yucatan, the main causes of their populationaldecrease have been two: the deforestation and their low participation into the market. In the present document, the causes ofthe deforestation in Yucatan and the causes of the low commercial participation of the meliponiculture have been exposed;furthermore, the relation between the agriculture, animal husbandry, and apiculture in Merida was as well identified. Thegotten results revealed how the apiculture-agriculture-animal husbandry relation is a primary cause of the decline of the bees, among them, the meliponas ones; why the meliponiculture is an unusual activity within the apiculture; and how the agricultureand the animal husbandry in Yucatan affect negatively the ecological sustainability, and more particularly, the wild bees.Key words: bee, deforestation, extinction, meliponiculture, sustainability.
