Where Fumes Are Deadly
In the past many thousands of
these men have suffered silently
from the many occupational diseases
caused by the acrid erases
of chemicals used. Today, largely
through the developments in
masks and respirators caused by
the European War, these evils
are greatly mitigated. On the
left a workman thus protected is
repairing pipes in a suffocating
atmosphere of ammonia gas.
BETTER THAN DEPENDING ON A LIGHTED CANDLE
In the old days it was the custom to lower a taper into any hole or compartment suspected of containing
either explosives or poisonous gas. If the candle went out, oran explosion resulted, the suspicions were
confirmed. Today, however, the workman gaily dons a mask and respirator and goes to work in the
sewer or down to repair a leaky gas main, without a qualm.
