steel across the hanger bars, and adjusting
it in such a way that when it is
pushed down on a pair of trousers or a
skirt it holds them firmly in place.
The inventor worked for years on the
idea, simple though it may appear. His
problem was to secure the necessarily
complicated machinery that would force
a piece of steel into the wood without
breaking that wood and to make a hanger
that could be sold as cheap as the simplest
forms on the market. He seems to
have solved the problem satisfactorily.
AIR FRICTION SPEEDOMETER
AND WATCH
THIS new speedometer has long been
promised in the automobile world.
It is a combination automobile watch and
speedometer, and works by
air friction. The speed measuring
portion is composed of
two cups, one of which telescopes
the other within the
air gap separating the two.
This air friction between the
cups is directly proportioned
to the speed of the revolving
cup. By this method uniform
calibration is made possible.
The instrument includes
season and trip odometers.
registering 999.9 and 99,999.9
miles.
The obvious difficulty
would seem to lie in the fact
that a head wind might increase
the apparent registered
speed unduly, but this has
been overcome to some extent
by the placing of mechanism.

A MODEL UNION
T H E professional artists' models of
Los Angeles are planning to form a
"models' union". Miss Mabel Foncy
Harvey, one of the best-known models in
the United States, is the originator of the
idea.
"Our work is no longer an appendage
of Bohemianism, it is a sober business,"
she said the other day referring to the
posing of an artist's model. "In Southern
California, especially Los Angeles,
there are many models. Their number is
being augmented. There seems to be
something in the California air that
draws the artists, and of course where
the artists are, there must the models
be also. So we have a large number of
them, and we have decided to organize."
"What will be the object of the organization?"
she was asked.
"Many of the girls are
young, and need the protection
of their older sisters,"
replied Miss Harvey. "While
a number of our models have
won an enviable reputation in
the eastern centers, yet there
are many here who are struggling
for place. Naturally
this condition invites impostors
to advertise themselves
as artists in order to trap the
girls in one way or another.
We shall ferret out these, and
by the use of legal means,
when necessary, crush out the
snakes. A lawyer of our sex
is helping to draft the bylaws
of the association. The
idea will be to look after our
girls and assist them in any
way they may desire or need.
