"VJT/RIST pins often cause trouble at a time
or place where it is impossible to make
or obtain new bushings and pins. The thing
to do in that event is to remove the pin and
bushing, and with a hack saw cut one side of
the bushing through. Replace the pin and turn
the set screw up tight. This eliminates the
knock and you may drive until it is more convenient
to put in new material, but the wear
will eventually make the bearing lopsided.

DRAKES that do not hold properly may often
be made as good as new by removing the
wheels and applying a blowtorch to the bands
until all the grease and foreign matter is burned
out of the fabric. This would not avail in a
case where the bands were so worn that there
could be no pressure against the drums.

A GOOD carbon antidote is water, injected
into the gas mixture every few days.
Have the engine good and hot and running at
a brisk rate. Then with a fine nozzle squirt
gun inject slowly into the air inlet of the carburetor
about a cupful of hot water. The
explosion of it during the combustion in the
cylinders does the desired work.

YY/ITH the usual types of carburetors installed
in standard makes of cars, there is
a good chance of saving yourself when you
run out of gasoline out on a country road. One
always can get kerosene at any farm house.
The float top of your carburetor can be unscrewed
; put what gasoline remains in the bottom
of the tank into the carburetor. After
the carburetor is filled with the remaining gasoline,
if there is still any gasoline left, mix this
with kerosene and pour it into the tank. Start
the engine on the gasoline in the carburetor,
and after it is started it should run on the
mixed gasoline and kerosene in the tank.
