The arc is established by touching
the electrode momentarily to the work
and then withdrawing it a
short distance, in a manner
similar to the operation of
an arc lamp in starting.
Practice is necessary in
order to manipulate the
electrode so as to maintain
an approximately constant

length of arc while welding. This point
is important as variations in the length
of the arc cause corresponding
variations in the
r- 1 current. After the arc is
established it can be
moved about over the
work merely by moving
the electrode from side to
side.
