slippery, or of awkward
shape. In
some places the
supplying of purified
plain water, of
natural mineral
water, or of manufacturedcarbonated
waters is quite
a business. With a
good strong handle
more weight
of liquid can be carried by the delivery
men, and the saving of broken bottles or
wasted contents more than pays for the
inexpensive accessory. The handle
works much like ice tongs. When placed
about the lip of the bottle, the steel gripping
arms are tightened.

PROTECTION FOR RARE
FLOWERS

O W that all large cities make an
event of their annual flower show,
it is very important
that
the original
color of the
rare flowers
exhibited be
retained. This
is almost impossible
in the
late summer
and early fall.
The intense
light of the
summer sun
bleaches the
first fresh tint
of some of
the strongly
colored
flowers, and
the danger of
early frost is another factor to be taken
into consideration.
European gardeners always have protected
their rare flowers by some covering
device, but in this country one now
can obtain flower protectors in packages.
The little protectors unfold and make a
substantial covering even for the very
largest flowers. They are made of
water-proof cloth stretched on an iron
frame. They can be adjusted to any desired
height. By this means all the delicate
gradations in the color of the flower
are retained.

COOK IT IN THE LAMP SHADE
T H E adaptation of electricity to cooking
purposes has resulted in the invention
and manufacture of many unique
yet practical devices
whereby
many simple
dishes may be
prepared on
short notice.
One of the latest
of these devices
is a combination
electric
lamp and stove.
On removing
the shade and
inverting it, it
screws into the
socket and
forms a cooking
bowl, in which
water can be
boiled, milk

soups heated. The base of the stand is
hollow and contains a toaster, receptacle,
and grill. These may be removed and
fitted within the inverted bowl.
During the past few months, manypeople
living in "non-housekeeping
rooms" have purchased these lamps in
order to be able to enjoy little snacks
from time to time without having to
borrow a kitchen, or use an open gas
flame and a hatpin.
