A "SAND-HOG" VOLUN­
TEERS
This photograph shows a novel ex­
periment resorted to in a tunnel
under the East river. A "blow­
out" had occurred—the compressed
air had escaped and ten feet of
water had replaced it. The tun­
nel was on a down grade and the
valve on the blow pipe was located
near the shield, at the lowest point.
If it could have been reached and
opened, the water could have been
blown from the tunnel heading
without installing pumps or new
blow lines. A sand - hog volun­
teered to don a diving suit and go
down into the heading under com­
pressed air and open the valve. He
made a successful trip down the
tunnel but, because of mud, could
not reach the valve.
