Street Car Homes for Consumptives
The Toronto, Canada, Free Hospital
for Consumptives, is the only institution
of its kind in the world where disused
street cars are used as living
apartments for consumptive patients.
One man resides in eachcar, and thereby
obtains plenty of fresh air while
still living indoors. There is also a
vegetable garden connected with the
hospital which is cultivated solely by
the patients. The street along which
these t.irs are lined goes by the name
of "Street Car Alley." Some of the
patients who can afford it have their
cars fitted up in palatial style.
Handcuffs Prisoners to Suitcase
Sheriff Charles A. Berry of Kent county,
Michigan, basso much respect for the
feelings of his prisoners that he never
leads them through the streets from the
jail to a court or train, handcuffed to an
officer. They are handcuffed to a suitcase
full of bricks, weighing many
pounds, and their coat sleeves hide the
shackles, giving them the appearance
of casual travelers. The number of
bri( ks in the case is proportioned to a
schedule kept at the jail which is graduated
according to the seriousness ol
the offense.
