their contents cool. It is the
main chance for the hardy performer
who takes the risk of
ascension to release his parachute
before the fall begins.
Whin he does this he is trusting
himself to the frail parachute.

Negotiating Falls on the
Athabasca River
For five months of the year
these sturdy Canadian voyageurs
or scowmen, as they
are more familiarly known,
stand guard over immense,
twenty-foot sweeps and guide
their lumbering flat boats, provision
laden, down the rapid
strewn waters of the Canadian
northland in Alberta and Mackenzie
land. Every hour they
risk their lives. The white
water reaches the tremendous
mill race speed of twenty miles
an hour, often little falls mark
the rivers' courses, but daringly
the "whitewater" men accept
the challenge.
