GOOD-BYE. GLITTERING BAYONET
One more line in the descriptions of the battle scenes of the future will have to be deleted by
the alert and well informed copy reader. The bayonet that used to glitter is now to be as dull
and non-glittering as the brown and dull barrel of the rifle itself.
By instructions of the Chief of Ordnance of the Army in April, the bayonet of the army service
rifle will be put through the regular "browning", or controlled rusting process used for finishing
up the barrels of the service rifle, and the bright and shining and menacing blade at the muzzle
of the rifle at the charge will
disappear.
The Russian bayonet, always
attached to the rifle, and provided
with no scabbard, is
browned, practically invisible
at any distance. Also it is of the old
style quadrangular type, instead of the
sword shape of most modern bayonets.
Lugging the Luggage Along
A new luggage carrier has been designed
to increase the capacity of the
flivver by utilizing the space
above the hood and thus leaving
the tonneau and running boards free for
passengers — or more baggage. A wrought
steel rack slips over the hood and is fastened
rigidly by supporting bars on either side. The
hood can be raised without interfering with the
carrier. When it is desired to throw the hood
jj way over and back the carrier can be removed
in about a minute.
A bracket is permanently attached and is
inconspicuous when the carrier is removed.
Two thumb screws and two screw couplings
complete the attachment in about a minute.
The parcels are held upon the platform with
straps.
