We Used to Import This
These beautiful marine hydroids
used to be brought
into the United States from
abroad, and cost American
milliners fancy prices—who
in turn, of course, levied
upon their women patrons.
Now we make the belated
discovery that our own river
bottoms and ocean sands
are covered with even finer
varieties of the same
growths, which can be secured
for use on artistic
millinery creations at a
fraction of their former
price.
Five Varieties
In the left upper corner is a
spray of deep-sea hydroid,
dyed a beautiful green. To
its right is a "sea lily"—the
piece of honor in many a
mermaid's bouquet. In the
center is one of the more
highly developed hydras.
At the bottom on the left is
the "mermaid's parasol",
while on the right is a delicate
feathery tuft from the
Potomac River that bids fair
to assume the place of poplarity
that ostrich plumes
formerly held.
