A "Safety First" Rifle
The altiscope-riflc, a firearm which proposes
to revolutionize trench warfare, has just burn
demonstrated recently on the Beverly Hill
government range at Beverly Hill, California.
By the use of this device it is possible to shoot
with perfect accuracy while the marksman is
crouched far below the edge of the trench.
Taking the rifle now used by the United
States Army, the inventors of this modern
death-dealer built into it a frame of compressed
steel, by which it is possible to raise or lower
the barrel. They also added reflecting lenses
which permit the marksman to hold the buttof
the rifle in the customary shoulder position,
and aim through the sights on the elevated
barrel. In this way the barrel of the rifle pro­
jects over the edge of the trench while the
marksman remains fully concealed from the
opposing force. The image of the target or
enemy, after passing through the two sights
with which all rifles are equipped ordinarily, is
caught by the small round elevated reflector,
which extends an inch or so above the top of
the trench. From this the view of country at
the opposite side of the breastwork is shot
down through a hole in the movable part of the
stock and is caught again, this time by a small
reflectorormirror located just below this mova­
ble section. It is claimed that it is equally as
easy to leam to shoot accurately with this new
altiscope rifle as it is with the ordinary firearm.
