The chains are
contained in steel
cone housings. By
pulling a lever the chains are released,
and the housing comes in contact with a
flat friction ring attached to each rear
wheel. This causes the cone to rotate,
and produces a swirling motion of the
chains, which swing by centrifugal force
under the rear wheels. Another pull on
the lever withdraws the contact, stops
the motion of the chains, draws them into
and inverts the cone.

over the pump handle,
thus keeping
the nozzle from
the ground.

A rubber band also may be used in an
emergency, but will not last long, as
grease and oil soon destroy rubber.
