of breaking the watch crystal by using a
new type of watch-face guard. The
guard is a metal framework resembling
somewhat the spokes of a wheel, which
fits over the face, and rests upon the
metal case of the watch. This framework
receives all blows which otherwise
would fall upon the crystal, and transmits
them to the metal case, which in all
except the dainty varieties of timepieces,
can stand anything short of a blow from
a club or a fall from an upper story
window upon a pavement. The open
spaces between the "spokes" are so designed
that the hour figures and the
hands can be seen as readily as though
the framework were not in place. The
new guard is winning great favor among
the Canadian troops now in training,
among whom, a few weeks ago, it was
given its initial tryout as a commercial
proposition.

ICE CREAM WITHOUT WORK
P\ON'T break your back and tire your
arms out making ice cream. Don't
wait for the men to come home and turn
the freezer. Don't give up and get your
ice cream at the corner drug store, either.
For this is the day of more ice cream
and no work for it. The auto vacuum
freezer freezes ice cream hard and
smooth in thirty minutes, without a bit
of turning. Just fill it and set it aside,
and forget about it until you wish to
serve it.
This freezer has but three parts to
clean, and nothing to get out of order,
and the vacuum makes the ice spend its
force against the cream chamber, and
not against the side of the freezer.
Three cents' worth of ice makes twelve
portions of cream. There is no chance
for ice or salt falling into the cream,
because the cream is put into one end,
and the ice and salt pack together into
the other.
When going on an auto trip start the
ice cream in the freezer, and after you
have been driving for half an hour your
ice cream is ready for you. It stays
frozen for eight hours without refilling
the ice chamber.
