SLEEPING KNAPSACK FOR
CAMPERS
A YOUNG woman of Pasadena, California,
has devised a unique knapsack
that serves almost every conceivable

need for camping in the open. The knapsack
weighs only a fraction over six
pounds, being made of No. 10 army canvas.
With a few moments' labor it can
be changed into a poncho, or raincoat, a
hammock, a sleeping bag, or folding cot,
an army tent, or a canoe. The knapsack
is about 9 l /2 feet in length, of double
covering, and thoroughly waterproof.
When used as a poncho, the wearer's
head is slipped through a narrow slit
made for that purpose. The canvas then
hangs in folds about the body, affording
an excellent protection against the rain.
The knapsack is changed into a hammock
by stretching the double covering
wide and attaching ropes to either end,
these being attached to some tree or support.
When used as an army tent the
canvas is
stretched out
and thrown
over boughs of
wood.
In order to
turn the knapsack
into a
canoe, one side
has been made
thoroughly
waterproof bybeing
painted
black. Rough
sticks of the
proper size and
shape are used
as the framework
and when
the canvas is
stretched over
these, the fisherman
or voyageur
camper
is in possession
of an ideal
