This can, made of galvanized steel, is
opened by foot pressure. When this
pressure is relieved the lid of the can
automatically closes and locks. There
is no possibility of the dangerous waste
material being scattered about on the
floor by careless overturning.
STAGING A MOTOR CAR
A MOTOR car illusion, one of the
^^ most effective pieces of "realism"
ever staged, is to be found in the popular
play "Turn to the Right" which had a
successful run at the Gaiety Theater,
New York.
In the last act the company, in accordance
with the plot, is assembled on
the darkened stage—in a late twilight
effect. Two of the characters are missing.
They have gone to journey by
motor car to a house shown to the audience
in the distance. Presently the
audience sees the car on its way up-hill
to the house. Then a light appears in
the lower windows of the house. This
goes out, but almost immediately the
upper windows are lighted. Then the
curtains in the little house are lowered.
The automobile is not an automobile
at all. It is made of pasteboard, with
a wooden base, and glides in a curved
groove. A bit of string wound on a
spool by a crank "operates" the car. A
dry battery furnishes the light.
The house on the hill is, of course,
painted canvas, with holes for the lights.
