more and more with engineers in designing
low-hung, powerful looking cars,
without crude, ugly breaks in their lines.
And at last the great majority of them
are coming to realize that there are no
horses in front
of the car, that
is, that it is not
necessary to
build a car high
up in the air.
The high-built
car is a relic
merely of by­
gone days of the
old coach, when
the passengers
had to sit high in the air that they might
see over the horses' backs.
The spirit of the Spartan has come to
the designer, and severe smoothness and
plainness prevails. This spirit has compelled
the designer to conceal
all handles, hinges, horns, tires,
and wheels, leaving long, unbroken
lines. A few of the designers
have even gone so far as
to entirely eliminate the running
board. The "runningboardless
car" has merely a
metal step for getting into the
car. One landaulet brougham, in
fact, is "so English" that it must
have a separate step of
metal for the chauffeur,
and a patent leather carriage
step for the other
occupants of the car.
One designer has
brought out a brand new
car, with a brand new
name, and "exclusive"
price—the Phianna, but
he has made the style as
old as possible, to resemble
the old-time
fashionable coach.
One concern has combined
the idea of the
touring car and the
coupe, calling the result
the "tourcoupe", a very
comfortable-looking, and powerful car.
Most all of the manufacturers have
agreed that there must be a double cowl.
One designer in particular is so emphatic
in this regard that he makes the double
cowl completely
cover the width
of the rear door,
and also the feet
of the passengers.
In fact, in
order to get into
the tonneau at
all, it is neces­
sary to swing
the rear windshield
around on
a pivot, enter, and then swing the windshield
back.
