light, and evenly-balanced canoe. The
young woman inventor used the contrivance
almost a week as a canoe, permitting
it to remain in water over night.
At the end of the week it was still intact
and showed no signs of leaking.
As a sleeping bag the contrivance furnishes
the most important usage. A large
flap extends over the sleeper's head,
which protects from wind or rain, though
it permits her plenty of air.

COOKIES AS BEAUTIFUL
AS "TASTY"
/""\NE of the "drawing cards" of the
professional baker is the attractive
appearance which he gives his wares.
The home cook easily can become his
rival if she will acquire some of his tools,
among them the fancy cookie press. The
cold cookie dough is put into a cylinder.
Beyond it is one of a choice of dies with
a small opening of fancy shape. Behind
it is the pressure of a plunger worked by
a handle. The dough has no alternative
but to come out in a continuous line of
ornamental surface. The cook then cuts
the cookie dough ribbon and forms it
into bars, circles, twists, or "what-not"
and bakes it into crisp confections which
make one hungry to behold.

SANITARY HIGH CHAIR
T H E tray on the average high chair is
very far from "sanitary", in fact, if
the ordinary wooden tray were kept absolutely
sanitary there wouldn't be much
left of it, with its cracks and crevices in
which food accumulates and decomposes.
The newest high chair has this porcelain
finish tray, and when the child is
removed from the chair, the tray is taken
out and cleaned just as a dish is cleaned.
The inside of the tray measures eight
by twelve inches.
ELECTRIC GAS LIGHTER
THIS gas lighter is so simple that anybody
can make one in a few minutes.
Not only is it cheaper than matches,
but it is cleaner and quicker to use.
The lighter resembles a small soldering
iron having a carbon tip attached to a
piece of stiff wire, which is covered
with an insulated handle. It is then connected
with the house lighting circuit.
The two carbons in the jar of water
act as a resistance coil, so that when the
stove is touched with the lighter, an arc
is formed.
It is always ready for use. To light
the gas merely turn handle and touch the
lighter to the stove over the burner or on
it; the arc ignites the gas.
